{"id":88784,"date":"2025-04-17T04:56:01","date_gmt":"2025-04-17T04:56:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tin.happy-projects.ro\/tariffs-could-spur-mass-timber-boom-in-b-c-amid-u-s-softwood-lumber-restrictions\/"},"modified":"2025-09-19T09:04:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-19T09:04:07","slug":"tariffs-could-spur-mass-timber-boom-in-b-c-amid-u-s-softwood-lumber-restrictions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.timberindustrynews.com\/ro\/tariffs-could-spur-mass-timber-boom-in-b-c-amid-u-s-softwood-lumber-restrictions\/","title":{"rendered":"Tariffs could spur mass-timber boom in B.C. amid U.S. softwood lumber restrictions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\" data-start=\"215\" data-end=\"479\">Trade tensions with the United States could accelerate the adoption of mass-timber construction in British Columbia, as Canadian softwood lumber producers face new tariff threats and the prospect of reduced access to U.S. markets.<span id=\"more-38003\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"481\" data-end=\"795\">The potential for a 45\u201355% total levy on Canadian softwood lumber exports to the United States\u2014including anti-dumping duties\u2014may lead to a temporary oversupply in the B.C. market, pushing prices down and creating favorable conditions for domestic builders, according to Vancouver-based developer Adera Development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"797\" data-end=\"1010\">\u201cThis presents a unique opportunity to harness B.C.'s lumber industry to fuel the rise of mass-timber construction locally,\u201d the company said in an April 8 statement marking a project milestone in North Vancouver.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1012\" data-end=\"1349\">Mass timber has gained attention in Canada as a sustainable alternative to steel and concrete. Although it is more expensive than traditional stick-framing methods using linear lumber, its efficiency during assembly can lower overall construction costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1351\" data-end=\"1648\">\u201cCompared to traditionally-built wood buildings, mass timber carries a premium,\u201d said Eric Andreasen, senior vice-president of sales and marketing at Adera. \u201cBut that premium is moderated by the speed of construction and reduced labour requirements. You don\u2019t need to have a massive framing team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1650\" data-end=\"1835\">The company has built about 1,000 mass-timber homes in B.C. since 2019 and is betting that more developers will follow suit\u2014especially if lumber prices fall due to weaker export demand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2590\" data-end=\"2848\">In Canada, mass timber is currently limited to use in buildings under 18 storeys. However, Clean Energy Canada, a think tank based at Simon Fraser University, says broader adoption could help reduce emissions without significantly raising construction costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2850\" data-end=\"3095\">\u201cBuilding with lower-carbon materials doesn\u2019t need to make housing more expensive\u2014and even has the added benefit of supporting Canadian industries at a time of high tariffs and trade tension,\u201d the organization said in a report published April 9.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3097\" data-end=\"3379\">The report found material emissions reductions of up to 98% for insulation and over 50% for drywall and rebar, often at negligible cost increases. Where small premiums existed, the added cost typically amounted to less than C$3,000\u2014a minor increase for multimillion-dollar projects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3381\" data-end=\"3644\">\u201cIf steel was the building material of the 1800s and concrete the 1900s,\u201d said Andreasen, \u201cwe believe the 21st century is going to be mass timber because it\u2019s the only thing that, if everyone was doing it, could slow down or possibly even reverse climate change.\u201d<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Trade tensions with the United States could accelerate the adoption of mass-timber construction in British Columbia, as Canadian softwood lumber producers face new tariff threats and the prospect of reduced access to U.S. markets.
