Now Holmen is making a similar announcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"94\" data-end=\"374\">Holmen is considering leaving the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification scheme, citing increasingly restrictive criteria in Sweden that it says threaten the forest sector\u2019s ability to contribute to climate goals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"376\" data-end=\"601\">Writing in a <em data-start=\"389\" data-end=\"405\">Dagens Nyheter<\/em> opinion piece on Monday, Holmen CEO Henrik Sj\u00f6lund said the FSC\u2019s Swedish standards are more stringent than international norms and risk undermining the climate benefits of forest-based products.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"603\" data-end=\"848\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"605\" data-end=\"848\"><em>\u201cHolmen has for a long time tried to engage in dialogue with both FSC Sweden and its international bodies. Unfortunately, we have not managed to reach a consensus. If we do not find a solution, Holmen will consider leaving FSC,\u201d <\/em>Sj\u00f6lund wrote.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"850\" data-end=\"1064\">He described the current situation as \u201cuntenable\u201d, arguing that the certification system places too much emphasis on preserving biodiversity without adequately weighing forestry\u2019s role in reducing carbon emissions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1066\" data-end=\"1322\">Sj\u00f6lund said the company wants to remain part of the FSC system but warned that the current framework prioritizes details over broader environmental impact, which could shift demand toward wood products from countries with weaker environmental protections.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1324\" data-end=\"1582\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1326\" data-end=\"1582\"><em>\u201cIn its current form, FSC Sweden is unable to weigh climate benefits against other values in a balanced way. The result is that society is missing out on the opportunity to utilize the full potential of the forest to contribute to climate goals,\u201d<\/em> he wrote.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1584\" data-end=\"1870\">Holmen\u2019s criticism follows a similar warning from SCA, Sweden\u2019s largest forest owner, which announced it would suspend FSC certification in its own forests from June 1 unless standards are revised. SCA has said it will remain an FSC member and resume certification if conditions change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1872\" data-end=\"2052\">More than half of Sweden\u2019s forests are FSC certified. In Finland, by contrast, around 80% of commercial forests are certified under the PEFC system, which is less common in Sweden.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2054\" data-end=\"2186\">Sj\u00f6lund called for a modernized certification approach that protects biodiversity while allowing continued active forest management.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2188\" data-end=\"2418\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2190\" data-end=\"2418\"><em>\u201cWe are ready for a constructive dialogue where forest owners, the forest industry, researchers and environmental organizations can jointly update certification standards to meet future demands \u2013 not those of the past,\u201d he said.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SCA recently announced that it is considering leaving the environmental certification body FSC.
