<\/span>The Finnish Competition and Consumer Authority (KKV) sees no obstacle to Stora Enso acquiring Junnikkala Oy. The Authority investigated the competitive effects of the acquisition of Stora Enso Oyj and Junnikkala Oy, particularly on the procurement of roundwood.<\/p>\n

Stora Enso announced last October that it would acquire the entire share capital of Junnikkala in 2024.<\/p>\n

\"According to the agency's assessment, the acquisition does not raise competition concerns, so the agency approved the acquisition without conditions,\" the release states.<\/p>\n

Stora Enso announced in October 2024 that it would acquire the entire share capital of sawmill and processing company Junnikkala. Junnikkala has three sawmills located in Kalajoki, Oulu and Oulainen. Stora Enso, in turn, has a sawmill in Veitsiluoto and a board mill in Oulu.<\/p>\n

In the further proceedings, the FCCA examined in more detail how the deal affects companies' purchases of logs from forest owners in the procurement areas of Stora Enso's Veitsiluoto sawmill and Junnikkala Oulu sawmill.\"<\/p>\n

According to the Finnish Forestry and Forestry Commission, the parties' market power is also limited by the fact that competing wood buyers can expand their procurement areas if log prices fall. The Finnish Forestry and Forestry Commission also notes that the parties' raw material needs and wood procurement strategies differ.<\/p>\n

Junnikkala Oy is a Finnish manufacturer of sawn timber and wood products, whose products are aimed at both Finland and export. It has three sawmills in Finland, including a new state-of-the-art sawmill located less than 10 kilometers from Stora Enso's Oulu packaging board mill.<\/p>\n

With the sale, Stora Enso's annual wood procurement in Finland will increase by approximately 1.7 million cubic meters and the group's sawing capacity will increase by approximately 700,000 cubic meters.<\/p>\n

The acquisition is expected to gradually generate annual synergy benefits of around 15 million euros, when the new sawmill in Junnikkala Oulu reaches its full capacity. The transaction will not affect the operation of Stora Enso's current sawmills. Junnikkala Oy's turnover in 2023 was 115 million euros.
