However, SCA says current FSC requirements in Sweden “create serious obstacles” to sustainable forestry and the company’s ability to secure both short- and long-term access to raw materials.

“It is not an easy decision to make, but it is necessary if we are to be able to meet our sustainability and climate goals and at the same time meet our commitments to our customers,” Mårtensson wrote.

SCA, which has been part of FSC Sweden for over 20 years, says forest owners have been losing influence in the standard-setting process. The company cites difficulties in meeting biodiversity targets, protecting old-growth forests, and complying with climate-related expectations that demand forests absorb millions of tonnes of CO₂ annually.

The decision has drawn criticism from the GS union, which represents forest and sawmill workers.
“We have not heard of this before, but we think it is unfortunate. We think certification is a good thing and hope for a solution,” said Julius Petzäll Mendonca, head of communications and investigations at the union.

The FSC certification is widely regarded as the most credible environmental standard in the global forestry and paper industries, used by over 60,000 companies. It guarantees sustainable forestry practices that protect biodiversity, uphold indigenous rights, maintain water quality, and store carbon. Companies certified under FSC must refrain from logging ecologically sensitive areas and respect reindeer husbandry practices.

In an internal communication obtained by local media, Mårtensson said that FSC's focus on conservation and biodiversity threatens the supply of climate-smart, renewable bio-based products. SCA argues that the standards fail to recognize the role of forestry in climate transition.

The decision follows repeated criticism of SCA’s logging plans in ecologically valuable areas. According to DN, SCA had intended to harvest in key biotopes—areas considered crucial for biodiversity. Environmental groups, including WWF and FSC Sweden, warned the move could reduce environmental safeguards, especially around high-value forests and Sami reindeer herding.

Jenny Wik Karlsson of the Sámi National Association called the decision “terrible,” accusing SCA of prioritizing profit over sustainability. She pointed out that many FSC requirements reflect international human rights and biodiversity agreements. Professor Bengt-Gunnar Jonsson from Mid Sweden University also questioned SCA's justification, stating that reducing logging would offer the most immediate climate benefits.

SCA manages nearly 20% of FSC-certified forestland in Sweden, and its withdrawal could significantly impact the availability of FSC-certified wood products on the market. Despite its exit from FSC Sweden effective June 1, the company says it will remain engaged with FSC at the international level and retain certification in the Baltics and parts of its global supply chain.

“We naturally want a well-functioning and effective FSC for all parties,” Mårtensson said. “Our hope is that our letter will open up a constructive dialogue where we can jointly find good solutions.”

Europe’s largest forest owner, Swedish forestry company SCA, plans to withdraw from the Swedish branch of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification, a decision that has sparked concern among trade unions, environmental groups, Sami organizations, and researchers.
