In Montana, 36 sawmills have closed since the 1990s. Only six remain.

An online article from Montana Public Radio explores the impacts and consequences of increased federal logging in the United States. Montana Public Radio is a network of public radio stations owned by the University of Montana. One of the remaining sawmills is Sun Mountain Lumber. The company saws Douglas fir and contorts.

“A steady and reliable supply of logs is crucial,” says Sean Steinebach , a representative for the sawmill company.

Sun Mountain is one of the largest employers in the area and has an impact on the entire county's economy.

The supply puzzle

President Donald Trump's executive order is opening up federal forests to logging, a move that environmental groups say could be devastating to wildlife and water quality.

Julia Altemus, president of the Montana Wood Products Association, a wood processing industry organization , sees most plants closing without a steady flow of wood. She welcomes the president's executive order.

“What we have left, we can’t lose anymore. Manufacturing plants are very capital-intensive. Once you lose one, it’s hard to get it back.”

Mindy Crandall, an assistant professor of forest policy at the University of Oregon, sees federal forests as just one part of the supply equation.

“This is a complex market. We have public timber, we have private timber, we import timber, and we don’t know exactly what’s going to happen to this puzzle.”

Problematic by-products

When logging companies apply for additional logging on federal lands, they must also take thinnings. This means harvesting smaller trees and producing a proportionally larger number of by-products, such as wood chips and sawdust. The number of companies that use these by-products from sawmills has decreased.

“If you can't give that material away, it becomes an additional cost,” Crandall says.

Sun Mountain sawmill receives more than 15 semi-trailer trucks of these byproducts every day. The company pays to ship them out of state.

Steinbach said other actions by the Trump administration are creating uncertainty. Federal grants that could help keep the facility afloat are being suspended for the time being.

Increased logging in the United States could lead to problems with thinnings and sawmill by-products.
