The cost of raw materials, especially high-quality hardwoods used in interior products, is now poised to climb sharply.

China imported more than 10 million cubic meters of non-coniferous logs in 2024, with an average price of $344 per cubic meter. A significant share of this volume originated from the United States, Southeast Asia, and South America. The sudden tariff hike may prompt a widespread re-evaluation of supply chains.

“These tariffs will raise input costs for furniture makers who depend on tropical and temperate hardwoods, particularly for premium products like veneer, cabinetry and flooring,” said Rudolf van Rensburg, consultant at Margules Groome. “Even with suspended U.S. hardwood imports at ports, these materials remain essential for high-end manufacturing.”

Wood imports account for around 15% of China’s total wood consumption, with much of it transformed into value-added products such as furniture, doors, cabinets, and decorative panels. Many of these finished goods are not exempt from the new tariffs, potentially triggering a chain reaction across the sector.

Exports of U.S. hardwood have come to a practical standstill as new import tariffs imposed by China and Canada take effect, leaving Chinese buyers and U.S. exporters scrambling for alternatives. There are reports of U.S. hardwood logs being shipped to China via third countries, notably Vietnam, but the dominant workaround appears to be rerouting U.S. logs to Vietnam or Canada for processing into lumber, which is then re-exported to China.

Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on hardwood lumber—enacted in response to U.S. duties on automobiles—have also halted direct lumber shipments from the U.S. Canadian sawmills, however, are ramping up purchases of U.S. logs, which remain tariff-free, particularly focusing on higher-value species to maintain export volumes.

Canadian concentration yards, which under normal circumstances would boost green lumber purchases from the U.S. for re-export to China, are holding off amid the current trade climate. Many in the sector hope for a political shift following the next federal elections in Canada. Until then, operators are attempting to maximize supply from Canadian mills while maintaining ties with key U.S. providers.

Meanwhile, Vietnamese sawmills are operating at full capacity to meet Chinese demand, sawing U.S. hardwood logs into lumber for downstream use.

In Europe, retaliation tariffs tied to earlier U.S. steel duties have been paused for 90 days, giving U.S. exporters a brief reprieve. However, concerns are rising over the upcoming implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which could further restrict access to key markets.

Industry players warn that prolonged cost pressures and trade uncertainty could reshape production patterns, particularly for exporters and high-end domestic brands. Furniture makers are exploring mitigation strategies, including alternative sourcing, design changes to reduce hardwood use, and investment in material efficiency.

U.S. exporters, caught between multiple fronts, are hoping that trade negotiations can restore access to major markets. But in the case of China, the path to resolution appears increasingly distant.

A new round of tariffs imposed by the United States—reaching as high as 125% on certain Chinese goods—is set to raise pressure on China’s furniture industry, which is heavily reliant on imported hardwoods, industry analysts said.
