<\/span>U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday suspended newly imposed tariffs on most countries for 90 days, reversing course amid a steep selloff in global financial markets. At the same time, he sharply raised import duties on Chinese goods to 125%, escalating a confrontation with Beijing.<\/p>\n

The move effectively narrows the sweeping trade conflict into a targeted economic battle with China. Trump\u2019s announcement triggered a relief rally on Wall Street, where the benchmark S&P 500 surged 9.5% \u2014 its strongest one-day gain in over a decade.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn light of ongoing discussions with over 75 countries and their willingness to engage in good-faith trade talks, I have authorized a 90-day PAUSE and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10%,\u201d Trump said in a post on Truth Social.<\/p>\n

The 10% rate replaces a series of higher tariffs that had been scheduled to hit key U.S. allies, including the European Union, Japan and South Korea, with levies ranging from 20% to 25%. The pause does not apply to Canada and Mexico, which remain subject to tariffs of up to 25% under a separate directive aimed at curbing fentanyl smuggling.<\/p>\n

China, however, remains in Washington\u2019s crosshairs. The 125% tariff on Chinese goods marks the most aggressive trade measure yet by the Trump administration and reflects growing frustration over what officials have described as Beijing\u2019s refusal to make meaningful concessions.<\/p>\n

Markets had been rattled in recent weeks as the White House prepared to roll out the new tariffs. Wednesday\u2019s climbdown came amid rising pressure from business leaders and signs of voter unease over shrinking retirement savings and elevated prices.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe bond market is very tricky,\u201d Trump told reporters at the White House. \u201cI was watching it. But if you look at it now, it\u2019s beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president acknowledged that fears of a broader economic fallout had influenced his decision. \u201cPeople were yippy and afraid,\u201d he said. \u201cWe don\u2019t want to hurt our friends \u2014 just the cheaters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s aides had spent weeks insisting that the tariffs were not part of a negotiating strategy. On Wednesday, Trump dismissed those claims, saying, \u201cA lot of times, it\u2019s not a negotiation until it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the administration prepares for bilateral negotiations with key trading partners during the 90-day reprieve, analysts say the escalation with China could further strain global supply chains and complicate an already fragile economic recovery.<\/p>\n
