The wood industry is encountering significant changes intended to secure Poland's forest resources, while Polish companies exporting wood are losing key sales markets, the report added. Notably, the government has imposed restrictions on the export of wood outside the EU, including to China, which had been the third-largest recipient of this raw material from Poland.

The furniture sector is a key component of Poland’s economy, with the industry employing over 136,000 people and contributing significantly to GDP. Poland is one of the leading EU countries in furniture exports, with a 19 percent market share, making the country the largest exporter of furniture in the region. However, the industry is facing increasing financial difficulties. According to the BIG InfoMonitor Debtor Register and BIK credit information database, the unpaid liabilities of the timber industry decreased by nearly 20 percent over the past two years, totaling PLN 91.6 million (around €19.24 million) at the end of January 2025. This sum was divided among just over 1,000 companies.

Export restrictions and increasing costs

Waldemar Rogowski, an analyst at BIG InfoMonitor, highlighted that the Polish timber industry is undergoing considerable regulatory changes. These changes are intended to secure the country’s forest resources and stabilize the raw material market. However, these actions are having negative financial effects on companies in the sector.

“The Polish government has already restricted the export of wood outside the EU, including to China, which was the third-largest recipient of Polish wood. This restriction is causing companies involved in wood export to lose key markets. Moreover, 1.3 percent of State Forests areas are subject to timber harvesting restrictions, and additional restrictions are being announced. These moves may increase production costs and impact the final prices of products, as well as the financial health of the entire industry,” said Rogowski.

The forestry and wood industry in Poland, which employs over 136,000 people, is also integral to the country’s economy. Poland's forestry and wood sector is responsible for a significant part of the national GDP. The report from BIG InfoMonitor further emphasized that Poland is one of the top leaders in the European Union for furniture exports, with a 19 percent share, making it the largest exporter of these products in the region. However, Poland is not immune to the challenges facing the global market, and its domestic timber sector is under increasing pressure.

Declining furniture exports and rising imports from China

In addition to the financial strain caused by the export restrictions, the Polish furniture industry is facing a significant decline in exports to Germany, which is the largest recipient of Polish furniture products. According to the report, furniture exports to Germany fell by around 4 percent last year, while imports from China increased. This shift is further exacerbating the financial challenges for Polish furniture manufacturers.

The situation is particularly dire for manufacturers of office and shop furniture, whose unpaid debts grew by 46 percent year-over-year, exceeding PLN 118 million (around €24.78 million). The debts of companies producing kitchen units also increased by 20 percent compared to the previous year, reaching over PLN 67 million (approximately €14.07 million). Interestingly, mattress manufacturers were the only group in the sector that did not see an increase in overdue debts, but this segment constitutes a small portion of the overall market.

The worsening financial condition of Polish furniture manufacturers has contributed to a rise in outstanding debts, which according to the BIG InfoMonitor Debtors Register and the BIK credit information database, amounted to nearly PLN 336 million (around €70.56 million) at the end of January, nearly PLN 63 million (approximately €13.23 million) or 23 percent more than the previous year. Experts warn that this growing debt burden may push more companies into insolvency in the near future.

Impact of the moratorium on tree felling

The financial difficulties faced by the timber and furniture industries are further compounded by the government’s moratorium on tree felling, which has already affected 94,000 hectares of forests in Poland. Zbigniew Kuszlewicz, Chairman of the National Secretariat of Natural Resources, Environmental Protection, and Forestry of NSZZ "Solidarność," warned that the situation may worsen. He pointed out that additional forest exclusions from timber harvesting are planned, including the exclusion of 17 percent of Poland's forest areas, which amounts to about 1.2 million hectares.

Kuszlewicz noted that these exclusions would significantly limit the available raw material for the timber industry, and there would be no possibility of sourcing the necessary wood from other areas of the State Forests. “What remains would have to rely on unsustainable, predatory forest management practices,” he said. This further limits the potential for growth in the sector, increasing the strain on companies already grappling with the impacts of export restrictions and rising operational costs.

Losses and potential economic fallout

In December of the previous year, the Coalition for Polish Wood expressed concerns over the dire situation facing the timber industry in an open letter to Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The coalition estimated that the planned exclusion of forests from timber harvesting this year could lead to financial losses of up to PLN 12 billion (around €2.52 billion). With the added challenges of reduced exports, rising import competition, and increasing operational restrictions, the Polish timber industry’s future remains uncertain.

At the end of January, the debts of furniture manufacturers in Poland amounted to PLN 336 million (approximately €70.56 million), marking an increase of 23 percent compared to the previous year, according to a report by BIG InfoMonitor.
