<\/span>The logging restrictions required by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change\u2019s (IPCC)\u00a0 could cause significant economic losses for the Finnish sawmill industry and lead to job losses.<\/p>\n

\"For example, a 20 percent logging restriction and the resulting permanent reduction in production would mean a reduction of almost a hundred person-years in a company that offers around 300 jobs,\" says Matti Kyl\u00e4vainio , CEO of Keitele Timber Oy , in an interview with Audiomedia, which follows the forestry industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn addition, logging restrictions would reduce forest owners' stumpage income, the income of transporters and other subcontractors, and state tax revenues, as the raw wood would remain unprocessed.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Kyl\u00e4vainio, the state should implement policies that support companies' production and international competitiveness, not restrict it.<\/p>\n

According to Kyl\u00e4vainio, who serves as the chairman of the board of the Finnish Sawmill Industry Association, Finland's strict climate target places unreasonable restrictions on the forest sector and may weaken competitiveness.<\/p>\n

\"Finland is the only country in the world that has set such an ambitious target. The targets should support competitiveness and take into account the importance of the forest sector as a solution to climate change, not as a cause of it. The responsibility of the entire land use sector should not be placed on forests.\"<\/p>\n

If the forest sector had to achieve the target with growing sinks in 15 years, it would mean massive restrictions on logging, according to Kyl\u00e4vainio. If the target were instead set for 2050, as in the EU, old, slow-growing forests could be renewed with good planting material and the targets set for sink growth could be achieved.<\/p>\n

\"The logging restrictions are justified by the fact that we are over-logging, even though the logging volumes are ten million cubic meters lower than in 2018. The situation has changed since the Climate Act was enacted. The harsh fact is that there is no emission compensator from the land use sector to offset emissions from other sectors,\" Kyl\u00e4vainio states.<\/p>\n

The Finnish Sawmilling Industry Association and a number of organizations operating in the forestry sector have demanded that the national carbon neutrality target set for 2035 be postponed.<\/p>\n
