With the U.S. accounting for around 15% of Ponsse's revenue, the uncertainty around the new tariff policy is already stirring concerns within the company. However, as Ponsse’s CEO, Juho Nummela, points out, the situation remains in flux, and the company is primarily observing the evolving political landscape.

"The political environment is so erratic that we can only wait and see how things develop," said Nummela. “At the moment, the market has not reacted significantly, but the volatility remains high.”

The impact of tariffs on supply chains and costs

Ponsse, a leading manufacturer of forestry machines like harvesters and forwarders, produces about 1,000 machines annually. The company’s supply chain relies entirely on European components, and with the imposition of the new tariffs, Ponsse is already feeling the pressure on its costs. While there is no hope for tariff exemptions, the first noticeable impact will be the increase in the prices of spare parts.

“It's still unclear how tariffs will affect machines that are already on their way to the U.S., whether they are sitting in port warehouses or already aboard ships,” Nummela explained. As the situation unfolds, Ponsse will continue to monitor the situation and adjust accordingly.

Ponsse’s main competitor in the U.S. market is John Deere, an American-owned company that manufactures forestry machines in Joensuu, Finland. While this gives Ponsse a strategic position in the European market, John Deere’s strong presence in the U.S. adds an additional layer of competitive pressure.

Price increases for end-users

Ponsse’s Chairman, Jarmo Vidgrén, believes that the effects of the tariffs on North American markets will become clearer in the coming days. He pointed out that the company cannot absorb the additional 20% cost increase internally, so these costs will inevitably be passed onto end-users in North America.

“The margins are fixed, so the 20% additional cost will be borne by the end customer. If we do not see this reflected in sales, then we’ve been selling too cheaply until now,” Vidgrén said, underlining that any additional cost pressures will have to be factored into the price.

The situation could worsen if a trade war leads to a further decline in the value of the dollar. Should this happen, Vidgrén warns that there will be increased cost pressures, which will likely affect profitability.

“If costs rise and revenues fall, we will have to consider strategic decisions,” Vidgrén stated. "In the long term, we will need to evaluate larger movements in our business strategy."

Shifting production to the U.S. is not a realistic option

Despite the potential for higher demand in the U.S. market, Vidgrén noted that the volumes are not large enough to justify moving production to the U.S. with two separate factories. The complexity of tariff impacts and the unpredictable nature of political decisions make such a move unrealistic for the company.

“The cascading effect of tariffs and the intricate nature of their impact makes it difficult to predict how we will be affected,” Vidgrén said. “Ponsse has dealers in Canada, and Canadian contractors supply wood to sawmills and pulp mills, which will also be affected by the tariffs.”

While the company is not yet making predictions regarding its earnings, the uncertainty around the tariffs is a significant factor as Ponsse prepares for its next financial results. The tariff situation is likely to play a crucial role in shaping the company's performance in the coming months.

President Donald Trump’s recent announcement of a 20% import tariff on goods from the EU -now paused- has caused significant turbulence in the market, including a notable drop in Ponsse’s stock price by over 10%.
