Free trade is crucial for Swedish industry in general, and especially for export-oriented sectors like the forest industry, which relies heavily on raw materials and production in Sweden with sales abroad,\" says Viveka Beckeman, CEO of the Swedish Forest Industries Federation (Skogsindustrierna).<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"635\" data-end=\"1073\">Between 5 and 10 percent of the forest industry's annual exports go to the United States, with Europe being the largest export market, accounting for around 60 percent. In 2024, the industry\u2019s annual export value is estimated to be approximately SEK 185 billion (\u20ac15.5 billion), which contributes significantly to Sweden's trade balance. It also plays a key role in generating jobs, funding welfare, and driving growth across the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1075\" data-end=\"1344\">\u201cThe forest industries are in close dialogue with our member companies, the Swedish government, and other business stakeholders to monitor developments. It is essential that this situation is addressed through well-balanced trade policy measures,\u201d says Viveka Beckeman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1346\" data-end=\"1517\">\u201cOn a broader international scale, there is a long-term need and demand for products and materials based on fossil-free and renewable forest raw materials,\u201d Beckeman adds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1519\" data-end=\"1785\">The White House website has identified wood products as one of the product segments exempt from the new tariffs. However, this is pending an investigation into future tariffs that the U.S. has initiated in parallel, which is expected to be completed later this fall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1787\" data-end=\"1838\"><strong data-start=\"1787\" data-end=\"1838\">A brief overview of the Swedish forest industry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1840\" data-end=\"2176\">Sweden is one of the world's largest exporters of pulp, paper, and sawn timber, with more than 80% of its forest products exported. The forest industry accounts for 9-12% of Sweden's total industrial employment, exports, turnover, and value added.
