<\/span>President Trump's latest tariffs have been dubbed a trade war in the media. The tariffs are different for different countries based on what can be called trade policy multipliers. The EU received 20 percent.<\/p>\n

The last time US import tariffs were at this level was in the first half of the 1930s. Economic history is largely unanimous that the tariffs and the subsequent countermeasures by other countries deepened the depression of the 1930s.<\/p>\n

The operating environment is deteriorating<\/strong><\/p>\n

A statement from the Finnish Forest Industries Federation states that the tariffs mean a significant deterioration in the operating environment for international trade and that the Finnish forest industry faces challenges due to potential tariffs.<\/p>\n

\"Such extensive and international tariffs on US trading partners, if implemented, would change the flow of goods, the competitive landscape of the markets and make it difficult to assess the economic outlook,\" says Maarit Lindstr\u00f6m , Chief Economist at the Finnish Forest Industries Federation .<\/p>\n

‍The Customs Implementing Regulation excluded product groups from the mechanical forest industry from tariffs, but it is possible to expand tariffs later.<\/p>\n

Trade war clouds<\/strong><\/p>\n

European industry associations in the forest sector have already prepared in advance for possible tariff negotiations and countermeasures.<\/p>\n

The Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) has called on the EU Commission to continue tariff negotiations. ‍If further negotiations fail and the United States maintains the proposed tariffs, CEPI will demand countermeasures from the EU.<\/p>\n

The European Wood Products Industry Confederation (Cei Bois) has also considered it important that the EU and the US maintain unhindered trade in wood products.<\/p>\n

Most often it hits paper<\/strong><\/p>\n

The value of Finland's total exports to the United States in 2023 was 8.5 billion euros, of which forest sector products accounted for approximately one billion.<\/p>\n

The United States is the third most important export country for the Finnish forest industry, with a share of almost ten percent. Forest exports have been on an upward trajectory and the value of exports has doubled since the depths of the financial crisis, in 2009.<\/p>\n

The majority of US exports of forest products, EUR 888 million, are from the pulping side. Of this, paper accounts for just over EUR 500 million. The most important paper types were magazine paper and fine paper. Fine paper refers to paper that has not been mechanically ground using pulp.<\/p>\n

The value of cardboard exports was 280 million.<\/p>\n

Pulp exports are small, 70 million euros, and almost entirely bleached softwood pulp.<\/p>\n

The wood products industry's exports were 119 million euros, of which roughly half were softwood plywood and a quarter were mainly planed sawn timber. The value of furniture exports is approximately 20 million. The remainder of wood products exports are divided into many products.<\/p>\n

The figures are from the Natural Resources Institute Finland's statistical database.<\/p>\n

The situation with lumber is unclear<\/strong><\/p>\n

The situation regarding lumber is, to put it mildly, unclear. The European Sawmilling Industry Association does not have the full picture either, but it appears that the tariffs will not apply to lumber, at least not in the first stage.<\/p>\n

If implemented, potential tariffs will particularly affect European countries such as Germany, Austria and Sweden, which have large-scale exports of sawn timber to the United States.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe direct impacts on the Finnish sawmill industry are minor, but the indirect consequences may be greater,\u201d estimates Tino Aalto, CEO of the Finnish Sawmill Industry Association .<\/p>\n

The big question is what the tariffs will do to European economic growth. Economists predict that the tariffs will slow down the entire continent's economic growth.
