Germany\u2019s state agriculture ministers have called on the federal government to push for a simplified implementation of the EU Regulation on Deforestation-Free Products (EUDR). <\/span>The German Sawmill and Timber Industry Association (DeSH) welcomed the initiative, emphasizing the need for a fundamental revision of the regulation. The current requirements impose excessive bureaucratic burdens on the forestry and timber sectors and could harm businesses.<\/p>\n

The EUDR aims to prevent deforestation in global supply chains, but months of discussions have failed to resolve concerns about its impact. Critics question whether the regulation is the right tool for achieving its goal or if it creates disruptions for European businesses, particularly as economic and geopolitical factors affect trade.<\/p>\n

\"In its current form, the EUDR places a disproportionate burden on German and European companies. We welcome the fact that state agriculture ministers have recognized and addressed the serious concerns of the industry. Our expectations now lie with the federal government to push for a policy shift at the European Commission,\" said DeSH Managing Director Julia M\u00f6bus.<\/p>\n

Industry concerns highlight need for action<\/strong><\/p>\n

DeSH has warned that the EUDR\u2019s extensive documentation and verification requirements could severely impact small and medium-sized businesses in the forestry and timber sectors. A recent survey among DeSH member companies found that three-quarters of respondents do not believe they can comply with the regulation by the December 30, 2025, deadline. \"Even with the one-year postponement, the EU Commission has yet to provide clarity on key implementation issues,\" M\u00f6bus added, reiterating the association\u2019s call for a fundamental review of the EUDR.<\/p>\n

EUDR risks missing its target<\/strong><\/p>\n

Trade and tariff disputes further complicate the effectiveness of the regulation. \"While the European forestry and timber industries face stringent scrutiny, discussions are already underway to grant exemptions for certain countries under international free trade agreements,\" M\u00f6bus pointed out. \"While our sector is under strict compliance demands, other nations may receive easier terms. To support European industry, the EUDR should be adjusted for countries with minimal deforestation risk.\"<\/p>\n

DeSH argues that the regulation, in its current form, does not reflect market realities. \"With shifting global trade flows and economic pressures, a rigid approach will only weaken European competitiveness. We hope the new German government will push for a shift in policy,\" M\u00f6bus said.<\/p>\n
