<\/span>U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that if the European Union and Canada take steps that harm the American economy, the U.S. will impose large-scale tariffs on exports to both markets, surpassing previous plans.<\/p>\n

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney recently visited London and Paris to strengthen trade ties in response to escalating tensions with Washington. His trip is widely seen as a direct reaction to Trump\u2019s trade policies, particularly U.S. tariffs on imported steel and aluminum.<\/p>\n

\u201cTrump\u2019s influence looms over Carney\u2019s visit,\u201d said Nelson Wiseman, an honorary professor at the University of Toronto. \u201cAmong all the issues he faces, dealing with U.S. trade policy is the most urgent.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s statement on social media platform Truth Social signaled that if the EU and Canada coordinate actions that impact U.S. economic interests, Washington will respond with tariffs at an unprecedented scale. This follows the U.S. government\u2019s recent rollout of new \u201creciprocal tariffs\u201d on imports, a move that could drive up costs and intensify trade friction.<\/p>\n

Canada and the EU are the third and fourth largest markets for U.S. lumber exports, trailing only China and the UK. Last year, the U.S. imported $1.62 billion worth of Canadian lumber products and $970 million from the EU.<\/p>\n
