The statement reads, <em>\u201cWith the Trump Administration\u2019s recent actions to impose tariffs, the North American building materials supply chain is facing significant disruption and uncertainty at a critical time. As a community, we oppose the proposed new tariffs on building materials<\/em>\u00a0. \u201d<\/p>\n<p>The NBMDA said tariffs on building materials would lead to inflationary pricing, which would be a burden on retailers and end consumers. As a \u201ccritical link in the building materials supply chain,\u201d distributors face a significant risk of building up expensive inventories to maintain supplies to customers. If tariffs are lifted, these existing inventories would create a holding effect and continue to keep prices high for months to come.<\/p>\n<p><em>\"These tariffs will deter demand for building materials and seriously impede the growth of both our communities and the profits of our small businesses<\/em>\u00a0,\" the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>For its part, the National Lumber and Building Materials Trades Association (NLBMDA) sent a letter to the Trump administration outlining the need for stability in its industry. Since January, the NLBMDA has been \u201cclosely monitoring the Administration\u2019s dynamic tariff stance\u201d and has been in constant contact with relevant industry associations to reinforce the homebuilding industry\u2019s position that price stability and long-term certainty are essential to addressing housing affordability and best serving consumers.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe U.S. has an affordable housing crisis, and as a country we must focus on advocating for policies that reduce construction costs and remove regulatory barriers. Policies to the contrary will detract from the advancement of affordable housing and create uncertainty throughout the market<\/em>\u00a0,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Jonathan Payne<\/strong>\u00a0, president and CEO of the association.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the US Lumber Coalition welcomed the tariffs, noting in a statement:\u00a0<em>\u201cThe US Lumber Coalition welcomes the Trump administration\u2019s strong commitment to enforcing US trade laws against Canada\u2019s unfair trade conduct that kills US jobs by stifling US lumber production and the continued growth of US manufacturing capacity<\/em>\u00a0. \u201d<\/p>\n<p>The coalition says the U.S. timber industry is at its highest level of excess capacity since the Great Recession \u2014 capacity that could be used to produce more lumber for home building.
