Wood industry company Rettenmeier aims to make the facility profitable in a slightly downsized form.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"281\" data-end=\"679\">The sawmill in Pl\u00f6\u00dfberg, located in the Tirschenreuth district, is back in operation. During a site visit in the afternoon, Stephan Lang, CEO of the new owner Rettenmeier Holding, provided insight into the restarted facility. The wood processing company, based in Wilburgstetten, Bavaria, took over the sawmill from the Ziegler Group after the company declared insolvency at the end of last year.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"681\" data-end=\"720\"><strong>Largest sawmill in Europe no more<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"722\" data-end=\"1223\">The Bavarian state government supported the takeover by ensuring that the Bavarian State Forests honored their supply contracts under the new ownership. As a result, Bavarian Minister of Economic Affairs Hubert Aiwanger (FW) attended the site visit. According to him, the State Forests will supply a base load of approximately 300,000 cubic meters of wood annually to the sawmill in the Betzenm\u00fchle district of Pl\u00f6\u00dfberg\u2014equivalent to about 20\u201325% of the facility\u2019s future yearly processing capacity.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1225\" data-end=\"1585\">Rettenmeier CEO Lang stated that the volume of processed wood will be slightly reduced. The sawmill is expected to handle between 1.3 and 1.5 million cubic meters annually, compared to the peak of 2.3 million cubic meters per year under the Ziegler Group. This means the facility will lose its status as \"Europe's largest sawmill\" based on processing volume.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1587\" data-end=\"1625\"><strong>Three-quarters of jobs preserved<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1627\" data-end=\"1968\">Most local employees were retained, though the sawmill now operates with 150 fewer workers than before the takeover. The layoffs linked to Ziegler's insolvency had a noticeable impact on the labor market in February, with the unemployment rate in Tirschenreuth County rising by 0.4 percentage points\u2014against the trend in surrounding areas.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1970\" data-end=\"2140\">So far, most of the insolvent Ziegler Group companies have been transferred to new owners, securing around three-quarters of the approximately 2,000 jobs in the region.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2142\" data-end=\"2211\"><strong>Complex corporate structure and insolvency fraud investigations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2213\" data-end=\"2671\">The unwinding of Ziegler Group\u2019s complex structure, consisting of 45 individual companies, remains unfinished. Last week, Eurosand, another company within the group, filed for insolvency in Weiden, affecting around 60 employees. According to insolvency administrator Volker B\u00f6hm, Eurosand was still entangled in financial obligations due to lease agreements tied to other Ziegler entities and relied on packaging supplies from a now-defunct sister company.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2673\" data-end=\"2854\">Additionally, the Regensburg public prosecutor\u2019s office is investigating nine cases involving former Ziegler Group companies on initial suspicion of delaying insolvency proceedings.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Pl\u00f6\u00dfberg sawmill\u2014previously the largest in Europe\u2014has resumed operations following Ziegler&#8217;s insolvency.
