From the point of view of the national economy, it is clear which one is worth choosing and whether it is worth driving down the forest sector. The Climate Panel has estimated the cost of technological carbon sinks to be at least 120-150 euros per CO2-eq , which means that it is also a cheaper solution than reducing logging,'' Jumppanen said.

If logging were restricted in Finland, two-thirds of it would be moved outside the EU, according to preliminary research results by Professor Maarit Kallio. As a result of logging, biodiversity risks are increasing globally and the utilization of sawn timber for long-term carbon sequestration is lower than in Europe.

Jumppanen (in the left photo) considers it unreasonable to try to make the forest sector the one paying for the consequences of climate change. '' The original culprit of climate change is the fossil fuel economy. When the forest sector is a bioeconomy and is based on renewable raw materials, limiting logging is not a solution for increasing sinks or achieving climate goals. In the climate debate, forest ecological and climate goals are mixed up, when ecological goals are pursued in the name of climate policy. More voluntary protection is needed in the forests of Southern Finland,'' he says.

Tying the climate target to forest sinks has been a mistake

According to Jumppanen, tying the carbon neutrality target to forest sinks that have become unstable as a result of climate change has been a mistake. ''When the calculation methods have been changed, there is a lot of uncertainty regarding soil emissions and forest sinks. For example, the 2019 sink has changed by 17 MT CO2-eq as a result of the change in the calculation methods, which is a truly huge amount. Measurement and calculation methods should be reliable, transparent and comparable in all EU countries,'' he says. ''The Commission is forced to reassess the overstated sink targets, as all forested Member States currently face the same problem of soil emissions and sink reduction. For example, in Germany, forest sinks were 40 million tonnes, but as a result of forest destruction they became a source of emissions of 20 million tonnes,'' Jumppanen added.

According to Jumppanen, instead of an unstable forest sink, climate goals must be based on reducing fossil emissions, technological carbon sinks and accelerating forest growth. – Now that climate policy based on forest sinks has been lost, we should focus on how forests adapt to a changing climate. As climate change progresses in any case, we must ensure that forests are still viable in a hundred years. We see in many countries such as Germany, the Czech Republic and Canada how forests are suffering from forest destruction and fires.

Statistics based on natural modeling are not based on verification

When it is claimed that Finland would have to buy sinks, Jumppanen asks who would buy them from and how would they be paid for, when all countries have the same problem. – The amount of soil emissions and forest sinks must be verified, not modeled. Without huge long-term and extensive monitoring data, reliable modeling of nature is impossible.

According to Jumppanen, Luke's research does not answer the question of what caused the change in the biomass coefficient. ''When statistics are published, it would be worth first clarifying the reasons and explaining the calculation principles. Now we do not know whether the assumptions used in calculating the statistics correspond to what is done in forests every day. For example, the number of thinnings has increased sharply in recent years,'' he says.

''With the previous old calculation methods, forests would still be a strong sink, which would mean a sink of approximately 10-15 million tons per year. When the new methods show a large soil emission to peatlands and mineral soils, the interpretation has changed,'' Jumppanen added.

Limiting logging would slow the growth of forests and sinks

According to Jumppanen, Finnish forests have passed the phase of the most intense growth in terms of age class structure and growth is slowing down. ''If we were to start limiting logging, growth would slow down even more, because forests are aging and the risks of natural disasters are increasing. Increasing forest sinks cannot be based on reducing logging, but on strengthening forest growth. An additional growth of ten million cubic meters would produce 12-15 million CO2-eq additional sinks. Extending the forest rotation period does not yield as many benefits as ash and cultivation fertilization, the use of processed planting material, and timely implementation of seedling management and thinning,'' he says.

According to Jumppanen, technological sinks have a large potential to increase sinks by 30-50 million CO2-eq in Finland. '' We are investigating how to utilize this at the Rauma pulp mill pilot plant. It is good to remember that wood construction is also a technical sink, in which carbon is bound throughout its life cycle. The research and development work in the forest industry focuses on several high-value solutions that can replace current fossil-based products,'' he says.

''Metsä Group has a concept of regenerative forestry, which builds climate resilience and more vibrant forests. In the future, it is important that we have deadwood, mixed forests and deciduous trees so that the forests are vibrant and more resistant to forest destruction. I personally believe that we should already be planting noble deciduous trees on this southern coast and see what tree species distribution in different parts of Finland is optimal in the 2100 climate scenario,'' Jumppanen said.

When the import of wood and fuel fractions from Russia ended, there were savings of ten million cubic meters every year. '' In the climate debate, it is forgotten that the climate knows no borders,'' he concluded.

According to Metsä Group’s Forest Director Juha Jumppanen, limiting logging would mean significant economic losses in the EU and Finland. If logging were reduced in Finland by 10-15 million cubic meters annually, it would mean a loss of two to … Continue reading →

[4716

post-88713","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-trends

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.9 -
