With 40% of Sweden’s timber imports originating from the region, the Baltic states have become an essential part of the supply chain.

Over the last century, forest coverage in Latvia has nearly doubled, from 27% to 53%, while Estonia and Lithuania each maintain around 2.3 million hectares of forestland. Today, approximately 50% of Baltic forests are privately owned, primarily on productive lands. Around 40% of Sweden’s imported wood comes from Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, ensuring a steady supply for the industry. Södra, which owns 153,000 hectares in the Baltics—mainly in Latvia—recently announced plans to divest its holdings. The company cited a strategic refocus on core operations in Sweden as the primary reason for the decision.

Beyond timber, the potential for additional revenue streams from carbon sequestration, wind, solar, hunting, and fishing remains largely unrealized in the Baltic region.
