<\/span>The financial condition of Poland's furniture manufacturers is deteriorating, with debts reaching PLN 336 million (around EUR 75 million) at the end of January 2025\u201423% more than a year earlier, according to data from BIG InfoMonitor. Meanwhile, the wood industry faces increasing regulatory pressures, and export restrictions are limiting access to key markets.<\/p>\n

Rising debt in the furniture sector<\/strong><\/p>\n

The report, citing data from the Ministry of Development and Technology, highlights that the forestry and wood industry employs over 136,000 people and plays a crucial role in Poland\u2019s economy. Poland is a leading exporter of furniture in the European Union, accounting for 19% of the market.<\/p>\n

However, financial difficulties are mounting. While unpaid liabilities in the timber sector have declined by nearly 20% over the past two years to PLN 91.6 million (around EUR 20.5 million), the furniture industry's debts continue to rise. Manufacturers of office and shop furniture are facing the worst conditions, with unpaid debts soaring by 46% in a year to exceed PLN 118 million (around EUR 26.5 million). Kitchen furniture producers have also seen a 20% increase in outstanding liabilities, now totaling over PLN 67 million (around EUR 15 million).<\/p>\n

Export restrictions and market shifts<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Polish government has imposed restrictions on wood exports outside the EU, affecting companies that rely on international markets. China, previously the third-largest recipient of Polish wood, is now largely cut off, further straining exporters.<\/p>\n

In addition to export controls, 1.3% of State Forests areas are now subject to logging restrictions, with more limitations expected. These measures are intended to protect forest resources but are also raising production costs, which could lead to higher prices for finished products and further financial strain on the industry.<\/p>\n

International pressures on the furniture sector<\/strong><\/p>\n

Poland\u2019s furniture industry, heavily dependent on exports, is also grappling with shifting trade dynamics. Exports to Germany, the largest market for Polish furniture, declined by 4% last year, while imports from China increased. This growing competition, combined with rising debts and regulatory changes, is placing significant pressure on domestic producers.<\/p>\n

While most sectors within the industry are struggling, mattress manufacturers remain an exception, as they have not recorded an increase in overdue debts. However, their market share is relatively small compared to other segments.<\/p>\n
