The increase has been rapid. The million-dollar question is whether they can rise even further. No one has the answer, but there are ways to improve the odds.

Many are now reconsidering their earlier statements that timber prices had likely peaked. Fascinating or alarming as it may be, the supply of timber in southern Sweden is not increasing despite the high prices. On the contrary, logging notifications have decreased.

Scarcity pricing often has a massive impact on price development—this is what we are witnessing now. The key question going forward is not whether prices will remain high but whether the scarcity of timber will persist.

No one can have missed that the new U.S. president, Donald Trump, has declared economic war on Canada. His goal appears to be to pressure Canada into submission before offering favorable terms if they align with his agenda. It is an aggressive and unexpected development. How does this affect Swedish forest owners?

Canada has exported significant volumes of forest products to the U.S. If that decreases, Canada will need to find new markets, possibly in Europe. At the same time, the U.S. has also started a trade war with China, leading to shifts in preferred suppliers.

As long as the U.S. does not impose tariffs on European forest products, Swedish industries will have a stronger competitive position in the U.S. market. However, we may also face increased competition from Canadian forest products in our domestic market.

This results in a lot of unnecessary logistics. Speaking of logistics, it is crucial to establish efficient timber flows from north to south. In northern Sweden, prices have not kept pace, and logging notifications have not declined. Northern forest owners have a strong incentive to attract timber buyers from the south.

In the short term, the only real relief for the timber shortage would be peace between Russia and Ukraine and a normalization of timber flows from Russia to the EU. That, however, seems distant.

Actively increasing the share of sawlogs in harvests and improving timber logistics within Sweden are essential investments for forest owners. Are we even approaching a point where politics will start prioritizing increased productivity in Swedish forestry?

Forest owners in southern Sweden have little reason to complain about current timber prices.
