According to recent statistics, production volumes in January 2025 increased by 8% compared to the previous month. While this is a positive development, industry experts say it is too early to draw conclusions. The sector is still operating below its peak levels, and market conditions remain uncertain.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, the Estonian wood industry faced a downturn. By the end of the third quarter, total industry revenue had fallen by 16% year-on-year, and production volumes were down 10.7% for the year. The January increase suggests that some segments are stabilizing.<\/p>\n<p>One area driving growth is plywood manufacturing. Companies like Kohila Vineer have reported increased sales volumes at the start of 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this improvement, the industry is still far from its pre-crisis levels. Production remains nearly 30% lower than in spring 2022. Analysts note that while the January figures are encouraging, they may partly reflect a low comparison base, as early 2024 was an exceptionally weak period for the sector.<\/p>\n<p>The Estonian wood industry depends on exports, particularly to European markets. However, demand remains inconsistent. While some key export destinations, such as Germany, show signs of recovery, others remain weak.<\/p>\n<p>Low demand in the construction and furniture industries, which are major consumers of Estonian wood products, continues to affect exports. Economic uncertainty in Europe is also influencing order volumes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2417\" data-end=\"2856\">The Estonian wood industry's production volume has negatively impacted the overall manufacturing industry's production since June 2022, a span of 31 consecutive months. In comparison to the middle of last year, the decline in the wood industry's production volume has largely subsided. By January, the production volume in the wood industry was 12% higher than the summer low of the previous year, but 30% lower than the peak in the spring of 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2858\" data-end=\"3135\">The wood industry's outlook, which largely depends on exports (65% are exported), improves with the decrease in interest rates. Demand in the construction and real estate markets in both Sweden and Finland is expected to gradually improve this year due to lower interest rates.<\/p>\n<p>The availability and pricing of raw materials remain key factors. Log prices have fluctuated due to shifting demand and supply constraints. Some producers have managed to pass on higher costs, while others are facing tighter margins.<\/p>\n<p>Plywood manufacturers have benefited from improved demand, leading to stronger sales figures. However, sawn wood producers are still dealing with market imbalances.<\/p>\n<p>Swedbank economist Marianna R\u00f5binskaja says that while the recent production growth is a good sign, the industry is not yet in stable recovery. \"The 8% increase in January is positive, but it follows a period of exceptionally low activity. The sector still has a long way to go,\" she explains.<\/p>\n<p>Mario Lambing, chief analyst at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications, notes that production volumes have fluctuated at similar levels for the past two years. \"The recent figures indicate progress, but it is too early to say whether this trend will continue throughout 2025,\" he says.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After several difficult years, Estonia\u2019s wood industry is showing signs of improvement.
