Forest owners report higher prices for spruce and pine sawlogs, with demand outpacing supply in many regions.

European sawmills are benefiting from strong timber exports to the United States, where supply shortages and a rebound in housing construction have raised demand. Spruce sawlogs are now selling for €103 to €115 per cubic meter (plus VAT) in countries like Germany, while some mills are securing additional payments for specific log lengths.

Pine sawlogs are also seeing strong demand, with prices ranging from €80 to €90 per cubic meter in several countries, including Finland, where the average price for pine logs has recently risen to €79.96 per cubic meter. Forest owners attribute this price surge to reduced volumes of damaged wood, which had previously kept prices lower. The overall availability of high-quality logs has tightened, further pushing up prices.

Construction recovery supports domestic demand

While lumber sales in Europe remain subdued, there are signs of improvement. Lower interest rates and better financing conditions are expected to boost construction, leading to stronger demand for sawn timber. The industry is also looking at the impact of a new public investment fund, which could provide a further push for infrastructure projects.

Felix Pakleppa, Managing Director of the German Construction Industry Association, says: "We have the capacity and expertise to take on new projects. If funding is released efficiently, we will see results quickly."

Despite these positive signs, sawmills are still cautious. Many report difficulties selling large volumes of lumber within Europe, as the construction sector has not fully recovered. Some are adjusting production to match demand, keeping inventories low to avoid oversupply.

Regional price fluctuations

Across Europe, timber prices are showing varying trends. For example, in Austria, spruce sawlog prices range from €75 to €115 per cubic meter, depending on the region, with slight increases in some areas. In Finland, average prices for pine and spruce sawlogs remain stable at €79.96 and €82.46 per cubic meter, respectively. Meanwhile, in Latvia, softwood sawlog prices range from €85 to €100 per cubic meter, with high-quality stands reaching the upper end of this range.

Industrial and energy wood markets remain weak

Unlike sawlog prices, industrial timber remains stable. Pulp and paper manufacturers have kept procurement levels steady, while production adjustments have prevented oversupply. However, prices for industrial timber were lowered at the beginning of the year and remain at those levels. Some forest owners expect better sales in the coming months, but there is little indication of a price rebound.

In contrast, energy wood is struggling. Stockpiles are high, and selling lower-grade wood outside long-term contracts has become difficult. Firewood demand has also slowed, as existing supplies exceed consumption. The market for wood chips remains weak, with little movement in pricing.

Outlook for the coming months

Timber prices in Europe will depend on the pace of construction growth and continued export demand. If European sawmills maintain strong sales to the U.S., domestic supply could tighten, keeping prices firm. At the same time, any changes in trade policies or shifts in North American production will influence the market.

For now, sawmills and forest owners expect demand to hold steady, with prices reflecting the balance between exports and domestic needs. The main factors to watch will be the pace of recovery in European construction, the strength of U.S. imports, and any shifts in log availability. If demand remains strong and supply stays tight, prices could rise further in the coming months.

Timber prices in Europe have increased sharply in early 2025, driven by strong exports and a gradual recovery in construction.
