<\/span>The European Union has postponed its initial countermeasures against the United States, originally set to take effect in early April, until mid-April. This delay allows the EU additional time to reconsider which U.S. goods will be targeted and provides further space for negotiations between the two sides.<\/p>\n

The European Commission had planned to reinstate 2018 tariffs on approximately \u20ac4.5 billion ($4.9 billion) worth of U.S. products on April 1, followed by another set of tariffs worth \u20ac18 billion, effective April 13. However, following a hearing at the European Parliament, European Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic announced that both tariff sets will now take effect in mid-April to allow for simultaneous consultation with EU member states and to provide more time for discussions with the U.S.<\/p>\n

\"We are now considering aligning the timing of the two sets of EU counter-measures so we can consult with member states on both lists simultaneously,\" Sefcovic said. He emphasized that the delay offers extra time for talks with U.S. counterparts.<\/p>\n

The first round of countermeasures, originally set to target U.S. bourbon with a 50% tariff, has drawn concerns from both sides. U.S. President Donald Trump had previously threatened to impose a 200% tariff on European wines and other alcoholic beverages if the EU moved forward with these tariffs.<\/p>\n

In response, U.S. officials are expected to announce their own \u201creciprocal\u201d tariffs on April 2 to address perceived imbalances in the global trading system. Sefcovic, however, expressed doubts over the U.S.'s approach, noting that while the EU has proposed discussions to lower import duties on industrial goods, the U.S. appears focused on using tariffs to drive investment and re-industrialization.<\/p>\n

The EU's decision to delay countermeasures comes after some concerns within Europe about escalating the trade dispute. French Prime Minister Fran\u00e7ois Bayrou and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni both urged caution. Bayrou expressed doubts about targeting American whiskey, while Meloni, who is closely aligned with Trump, warned against further escalation, suggesting that imposing tariffs on tariffs might not be the best course of action.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Micheal Martin of Ireland, a major whiskey exporter, also supported the delay, emphasizing the importance of carefully assessing the U.S. package of measures before responding strategically. He noted that the EU's decision to hold off on implementing tariffs until mid-April would provide Europe with the time needed to assess the U.S. response and weigh potential outcomes.<\/p>\n

The delay in tariffs allows for potential adjustments to the list of targeted U.S. goods, including key wood products. Europe imports from U.S. hardwoods and processed wood materials, and there are concerns that higher tariffs could drive up costs and lead European buyers to seek alternative suppliers.<\/p>\n

The U.S. has already faced significant pressure from trade disruptions, with China recently suspending imports of U.S. logs, citing biosecurity concerns. Additionally, U.S. softwood lumber tariffs on Canada are set to increase dramatically in April, further compounding the challenges faced by the U.S. timber sector.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
