<\/span>Malaysia's timber industry is facing mounting pressure as the United States and European Union consider new trade restrictions, including tariffs and the potential classification of key timber species under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).<\/p>\n

The proposed listing of Shorea, known locally as Meranti, and Apitong (Keruing) under CITES could significantly limit exports to Western markets. This, combined with impending US tariffs, is raising concerns about the future of Malaysia's timber exports, industry representatives say.<\/p>\n

Wong Kar Wai, treasurer of the Timber Exporters\u2019 Association of Malaysia (TEAM), said that despite sustainable harvesting practices, Malaysian timber faces growing trade barriers.<\/p>\n

\u201cKeruing is a specialized timber primarily used for floorboards, with the US military being a key buyer due to its durability,\u201d Wong said. \u201cHowever, the US is shifting towards domestic alternatives like Red Oak and is considering placing Keruing under CITES to restrict its trade.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to TEAM, the classification of Shorea and Apitong as endangered species under CITES would impose strict trade restrictions, severely impacting Malaysian timber producers.<\/p>\n

TEAM president Chua Song Fong said a vote on the inclusion of Shorea in CITES Appendix II is scheduled for the CITES CoP20 Conference in Uzbekistan from Nov. 24 to Dec. 5.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf these species are added to CITES, it will introduce stricter trade regulations and make exports more difficult, even though they are sourced sustainably,\u201d Chua said in a letter to TEAM members.<\/p>\n

TEAM and the Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB) met on Feb. 27 to discuss the issue and have since urged the Malaysian government to intervene. The industry is calling on the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability to counter claims that these species are at risk.<\/p>\n

In a letter to the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the US-based Hardwood Federation urged authorities to list Apitong under CITES, arguing that it faces unsustainable harvesting. The federation also cited ongoing efforts by the US Department of Defense to replace Apitong with Red Oak for military vehicle flooring.<\/p>\n

The National Defense Authorization Act has reclassified Apitong as an endangered species, with bipartisan support in Congress backing a shift toward Red Oak as a sustainable alternative.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the EU is conducting a review of key timber species, including Meranti and Balau. The EU Scientific Review Group is assessing their conservation status, citing concerns that excessive logging is driving population declines. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, 65% of these species are threatened, with 86% showing declining numbers.<\/p>\n

Trade data from UN Comtrade indicates that at least 5.3 million tonnes of Meranti timber products were traded globally between 2014 and 2023, with the EU being a major importer.<\/p>\n

The EU has requested feedback from Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand regarding trade levels, sustainability practices, and conservation efforts. It remains unclear whether Malaysia submitted a response before the Nov. 29, 2024, deadline.<\/p>\n

Industry stakeholders warn that without a strong response, Malaysia risks losing access to key markets, jeopardizing jobs and revenues in the timber sector.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
