Regardless of demand fluctuations, prices are on the rise, recovering from the low levels that prevailed in Q4 of last year. Producers are now implementing regular price increments, which are set to take effect on a monthly basis.

Last autumn, Baltic processors supplying the UK struggled with an unworkable market as escalating log costs far outpaced potential returns from UK buyers. As reported previously, many producers pivoted away from building specifications in favor of wood fuel, pallet wood, and agricultural fencing. This shift remains evident today, with numerous UK ports displaying an increased trade in Latvian C24 and batten alternatives such as rounded posts and general landscaping products.

A similar challenge has now emerged in Sweden, where raw material costs and supply constraints are reshaping production strategies. To balance supply and demand for the UK market, mills in the south have opted to suspend production for varying periods rather than merely reducing shifts, as they had in the past. These strategic decisions have helped mitigate losses and contributed to price increases along the supply chain.

March marks the first notable price increases for UK imports since last summer. However, merchants remain concerned about potential price reversals, emphasizing the need for shippers to maintain stability in the market.

According to Timber Development UK (TDUK), UK softwood imports increased by approximately 86,000m3 (+1.5%) in 2024, with the sterling value moving in parallel. This suggests that the average price index remained unchanged from 2023. Within the figures, Sweden’s exports to the UK showed a slight decline, whereas Latvia recorded gains.

UK softwood imports: TDUK statistics (cubic meters)

Year

Volume (m3)

% Change

2024

5,808,000

+1.50%

2023

5,722,000

+0.79%

2022

5,677,000

-25.09%

2021

7,578,000

+15.17%

2020

6,580,000

+2.91%

At year-end, Sweden retained the largest share of the UK market at 47% (2,729,000m3), followed by Latvia at 17%, Finland at 12%, and both Germany and the Irish Republic at 8% each.

A closer look at joinery and quality grades reveals a gradual reduction in the average diameter of harvested Nordic and Scandinavian redwood logs. This has led to a greater proportion of center-cut material, thereby reducing the availability of sideboards in both unsorted and fifth grades.

Meanwhile, whitewood log shortages in some Swedish regions have prompted a shift in kiln-dried redwood volumes toward treated carcassing, a key material for the UK market. Redwood’s ability to meet both UC3 and UC4 treatment performance levels makes it a preferred alternative to spruce, which has lower porosity and limited preservative penetration.

Off-site timber frame construction, cassette floors, and engineered wood structural beams are gaining traction, while solid wood joist designs are being specified less frequently, particularly in UK housing developments.

The UK housing market remains a widely debated topic, not just within the timber trade but also across national media. A consensus among housebuilders suggests that current planning reform efforts primarily benefit major developers.

There are approximately 2,500 registered small to medium-sized builders in the UK capable of developing sites of 10–20 houses. However, these builders report increasing difficulty in securing planning approval. Unlike large-scale developers who favor I-joists and laminated veneer lumber (LVL), these smaller firms tend to use solid softwood joists, making them a key market segment for solid wood consumption.

To meet the UK government’s goal of 1.5 million new homes during its term, the housebuilding industry warns that planning reforms must support builders of all sizes. Without inclusive policies, the initiative risks failing to achieve its objectives.

As March progresses, raw material shortages and increased log costs are exerting significant pressure on the UK market.
