<\/span>Recently, global shipping giant Maersk issued a notice stating that, in order to continue providing customers with a broader range of high-quality services, the company will implement a comprehensive increase in FAK (Freight All Kinds) rates for the Far East\u2013Mediterranean route starting March 31, 2025. Specifically, the rate for a 20-foot standard container will rise to a maximum of $5,040, while a 40-foot standard container will reach a new high of $6,300.<\/p>\n

This price increase reflects the ongoing volatility in the global shipping market. According to Judah Levine, a researcher at the international freight platform Freightos, the hike is driven by multiple factors, including a seasonal drop in demand, the potential end of pre-shipment trends, and a sharp recent decline in trans-Pacific freight rates.<\/p>\n

Currently, shipping rates for the U.S. West Coast have fallen below $3,000 per FEU (forty-foot equivalent unit), while rates for the East Coast are now under $4,000\u2014levels comparable to the post-Lunar New Year lows of last year. Meanwhile, freight rates from Asia to Northern Europe and the Mediterranean have seen slight increases, reaching $2,973 and $4,177 per FEU, respectively.<\/p>\n

In response to market fluctuations, other major shipping companies have also announced price hikes. HMM has declared that, starting March 1, 2025, a General Rate Increase (GRI) will apply to shipments bound for the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Similarly, CMA CGM has introduced new FAK rates for the Far East\u2013Mediterranean and North Africa routes, effective from March 1, 2025 (based on the loading date).<\/p>\n

Earlier, Maersk had already announced an FAK rate increase for the Far East\u2013Mediterranean route effective March 3, 2025, along with a Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) on shipments from China and Hong Kong to Kenya starting March 17, 2025.<\/p>\n

For the timber industry, rising shipping costs will undoubtedly increase transportation expenses, potentially impacting international trade. This is especially concerning for businesses relying on the Far East\u2013Mediterranean route for timber exports, as the rate hikes present a significant challenge. However, some industry insiders believe that as U.S. tariff policies become clearer, freight markets may stabilize or even rebound.
