The largest export income last year was generated by lumber - by 85 million euros, roundwood - by 62 million euros, fuel wood - by 43 million euros, as well as plywood.

The Vice President of the Latvian Wood Industry Federation, Kristaps Klauss, emphasizes that 2024 was a time when production recovered after the increase in all types of costs in 2022 and the increase in interest rates to curb inflation in 2023, which slowed down the economy, especially in the real estate segment. “Sawn timber products, as well as wood pellet producers, regained their competitiveness last year, which is also reflected in export statistics,” explains K. Klauss.

He points out that last year 1.76 million tons of wood pellet were exported, while last year (in 2023) – 1.31 million tons, and significantly more coniferous lumber was exported – 2.82 million m3 in 2024, but in 2023 – only 2.42 million m3. "In fact, the export volume of several other wood products last year was also higher than in 2023, at the same time, not all products have increased sales prices, so the increase in income may not be as large as one would like," explains K. Klauss. He admits, however, that the increase in roundwood exports is surprising.

"Forestry volumes in Latvia did not increase at all last year, and to think that the roundwood accumulated for the energy sector, but not sold due to the warmer winter, has been exported for replanting in Scandinavia, mainly Sweden, does not seem very economically logical either, so I will be cautious with conclusions about the increase in roundwood export volumes," K. Klauss answers the question about roundwood exports.

Latvian forest industry export revenue reached 3.41 billion euros in 2024, which is 3.4% or 113.71 million euros more than in 2023.
