The findings highlight the increasing challenges these countries will face in securing alternative markets unless they adopt stricter sustainability mechanisms, such as the EU Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade (FLEGT) program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shifts in production and trade<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Using the Forest Resource Outlook Model (FOROM) to simulate the effects of the EUDR, the study estimates that Brazil, Indonesia, and Malaysia will experience substantial reductions in roundwood production and exports, leading to higher prices for downstream products such as softwood sawlogs and wood panels. Conversely, Canada (1.4% increase) and the US (0.1% increase) may see modest production gains as European markets seek alternative sources of timber.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia\u2019s roundwood production is projected to decline by up to 7%, with a 1-1.2% drop in lumber output and a 16% reduction in panel production. Malaysia\u2019s roundwood production is expected to contract by 8.5%, while Brazilian roundwood output could fall by up to 10.1%, with lumber and panel production decreasing by 12.6%.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the EU\u2019s own roundwood production is expected to see slight increases as supply chains adapt to EUDR requirements. Germany\u2019s roundwood output is projected to rise by 0.5% under the current EUDR framework and 1% under EUDR+. Austria, Poland, and Latvia may also experience minor production increases.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Price volatility and market adjustments<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The study predicts a significant shift in timber pricing dynamics. Brazilian roundwood prices are expected to fall by 7-10.2%, while finished lumber prices could rise by 14.6-19.9%, and panel prices may increase by 7.9-10.3%. In contrast, price fluctuations in the EU and North America are expected to be minimal. Germany\u2019s roundwood prices are forecasted to increase by 0.5-1%, with lumber prices rising by 0.7-1.1% and panel prices in Latvia increasing by 2.4-2.6%.
