This is evident when examining operating margins, which, in most cases, are at or just above zero, even before depreciation. Announced production curtailments at sawmills in southern Sweden further reflect these difficulties.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"423\" data-end=\"1250\">Looking at the financial results of companies that have reported as of March 4, it is clear that two of them\u2014S\u00f6dra and Stora Enso\u2014broke even before depreciation, while Holmen managed to stay slightly above zero. SCA stands out with a 16.5% margin. Over the full year, SCA remains by far the most profitable sawmilling operation, a gap that has widened compared to previous downturns. In 2024, SCA\u2019s sawmills earned SEK 383\/m\u00b3 (EUR 33.50\/m\u00b3) more than the average of other Swedish sawmills (Vida\u2019s data is based on nine months, as its full-year report has not yet been released). During the previous market trough in 2019, SCA's margins were in line with the rest of the sector (see chart). The reasons behind this are uncertain but likely stem from well-invested sawmills and strong integration with its own forest resources.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1252\" data-end=\"1792\">All sawmill companies express cautious optimism, with an emphasis on caution. Signals from the renovation, maintenance, and improvement (RMI) sector indicate expectations of a better spring than the past two years, though those years were exceptionally weak, meaning expectations remain modest. This is also reflected in the National Institute of Economic Research\u2019s business barometer for Swedish sawmills, which suggests increasing optimism. However, for now, it remains cautious optimism rather than a strong rebound.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1794\" data-end=\"2504\">Regarding export markets, Europe does not appear to be providing much support, while several industry contacts highlight surprisingly strong demand from North Africa and the Middle East, driven by major construction projects. The biggest wildcard, however, remains the U.S., with potential risks both upward and downward. Underlying demand is relatively solid, and production curtailments in the fall have led to higher prices. Lumber futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange have now surpassed the previous peak from March last year. However, uncertainty surrounding tariffs on Canadian lumber adds another layer of unpredictability, with no clarity on whether tariffs will be imposed on European imports.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2506\" data-end=\"2709\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">What still leads most industry players to expect rising prices is that record-high log costs are forcing sawmills to raise prices while log shortages\u2014both in Sweden and globally\u2014continue to limit supply.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Despite a slight increase in Swedish lumber prices in 2024, the soaring log prices\u2014and in some cases, outright log shortages\u2014have severely impacted profitability of the Swedish sawmills.
