<\/span>On Thursday, President Trump temporarily suspended the 25% tariffs he imposed earlier this week on imports from Canada, including softwood lumber. The exemptions will remain in place until April 2, when Trump has threatened to impose reciprocal tariffs on all U.S. trading partners.<\/p>\n

Initially, the tariffs were set to affect a wide range of goods, with an exemption for Mexico mentioned earlier in the day. However, after signing the amendment later in the afternoon, Trump extended the exemption to Canada as well. This move offers a brief reprieve to Canada\u2019s lumber industry, which has faced ongoing challenges due to trade restrictions and high tariffs from the U.S.<\/p>\n

In response to the suspension, Canada has decided to delay a second wave of retaliatory tariffs on C$125 billion worth of U.S. products until April 2. While this gives Canadian lumber producers some breathing room, the uncertainty over future tariff rates continues to cast a shadow over the industry.<\/p>\n

The revised White House order, however, does not fully cover energy products, with Trump maintaining a separate 10% levy on these items. A White House official clarified that not all energy products imported from Canada are included under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which has led to continued tariffs in this area.
