Christian Nielsen, market analyst at the Swedish Forest Industries Federation, discussed the situation in a recent interview.

The purpose of the tariffs, which include a 25% tariff on wood from Canada, is to increase US domestic production. However, Nielsen believes this will not meet the demand.

Currently, the US imports about 30% of its wood needs, with 25% coming from Canada. Nielsen emphasized that it’s unrealistic to believe the US could become self-sufficient in softwood sawlogs within a reasonable timeframe. The US is facing a significant need for more housing, and they will likely continue to import building materials. In the end, Nielsen suggested that the tariffs will likely hurt American consumers, who will have to pay higher prices.

While the US has sufficient forest resources to be self-sufficient in theory, Nielsen pointed out that many of these forests are not accessible for logging. As a result, the US is expected to remain dependent on imports for the foreseeable future, especially high-quality softwood from Canada and Europe.

Despite having the forest resources, the situation is not simple. On March 1, President Trump issued an Executive Order to open up US forests for logging, focusing on increasing federal logging by reducing environmental considerations. However, Nielsen questioned how effective this order would be in the short term, particularly given legal and regulatory constraints.

Even if the US could increase logging, Nielsen noted that the sawmill industry would struggle to process the additional wood. While the US sawmill industry is one of the largest in the world, there is not enough capacity to meet the entire national demand. Investments in new capacity would be necessary, but such decisions take time and carry significant risk, especially with the uncertainty of the political climate in the coming years.

The impact of the tariffs on Canada will primarily affect American consumers and the construction sector, which will face higher costs. Nielsen also expressed concern about the broader implications of the tariffs on global trade policies. While the tariffs may encourage some increase in domestic US production, they are unlikely to fully satisfy demand.

The escalating trade conflict does not benefit anyone, especially a forest-exporting nation like Sweden, which relies heavily on exports. Nielsen highlighted that 70-80% of Sweden’s wood products and 92% of its paper and carton production are exported. He also noted that the global flow of forest industry products could shift as a result of the higher US tariffs on Canadian wood.

Further details on potential tariffs from the US against Europe are expected to emerge in early April.

On March 4, new tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico came into effect in the United States.
