<\/span>Karl Hedin, a prominent figure in the Swedish sawmill and building materials industry, has decided to sell large parts of his business empire. Svenska Handelsbanken has been tasked with finding buyers for the company\u2019s sawmill operations, building materials trade, and packaging industry.<\/p>\n

The building materials trade is a significant part of AB Karl Hedin\u2019s operations, with more than 50 locations across Sweden and an annual turnover of just over SEK 3 billion (approx. EUR 270 million). The sawmills, another core division, generate SEK 1 billion (approx. EUR 90 million) in annual turnover, according to the company\u2019s latest financial report from 2023.<\/p>\n

Karl Hedin has not commented on the expected price for the sale but confirmed that discussions are underway with potential buyers.<\/p>\n

No successor within the family<\/strong><\/p>\n

Having led the company for over four decades, Karl Hedin, now 75, has decided to sell due to the lack of a successor within his family. When he took over the business in the early 1980s, it consisted of a single sawmill, a planing mill, and two timber yards. Under his leadership, the company expanded significantly, growing into one of Sweden\u2019s most well-known privately owned industrial groups in the wood and construction materials sector.<\/p>\n

Despite his deep attachment to the company, Hedin acknowledges that none of his children will take over the business.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy two daughters are not prepared to take over, which would have been fun. But it is what it is,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Business restructuring and valuation<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2019, AB Karl Hedin was split into five separate companies as part of a restructuring process. At that time, total assets were valued at approximately SEK 7.2 billion (approx. EUR 650 million), including debts of SEK 676 million (approx. EUR 60 million).<\/p>\n

The company has since continued to perform strongly, with steady demand for its sawmill products, building materials, and packaging solutions. The sale, however, will not include all aspects of the business.<\/p>\n

Retaining forest holdings and financial operations<\/strong><\/p>\n

While divesting the sawmills, building materials trade, and packaging industry, Karl Hedin will retain ownership of the company\u2019s extensive forest holdings. These include 7,126 hectares of privately owned productive forest land, along with an additional 31,030 hectares owned by the company. The forests, which have been a key part of the business, will remain under Hedin\u2019s control.<\/p>\n

Additionally, he will continue to oversee the company\u2019s financial operations, which were separated from the industrial business during the restructuring.<\/p>\n

Market interest<\/strong><\/p>\n

Although Hedin has not disclosed potential buyers, he remains optimistic about finalizing a deal in the near future.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is definitely interest. I believe a transaction can be completed within the first half of this year,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

The sale marks a significant transition for one of Sweden\u2019s most established family-owned companies in the wood industry.
