At the end of last year, the German sawmill group Ziegler Group went into insolvency. The group included over 30 units, among them two Swedish sawmills. <\/span>One of these is B\u00e4ckebrons Sawmill in V\u00e4rmland, which now hopes that the new owner, Rettenmeier, will take over and further develop the business.<\/p>\n

B\u00e4ckebrons Sawmill has undergone significant upgrades in recent years, including a new boiler and a new sawline. The management hopes to continue investing in a new packager and stick placer, but first, a new owner is needed.<\/p>\n

Ziegler Group acquired B\u00e4ckebrons Sawmill and Balungstrands Sawmill in Dalarna in May 2022. Why the German company chose to invest in these specific sawmills, or in Swedish sawmills at all, remains unclear to B\u00e4ckebron\u2019s management.<\/p>\n

\"Their response was that they wanted access to high-quality Swedish raw materials. We wondered if that meant they wanted to buy our products, but that was not the case. During the profitable years for the sawmill industry, many companies built up significant reserves, and Ziegler Group probably thought it would be interesting to own a couple of sawmills in Sweden as well,\" said Stefan Gillberg, CEO of B\u00e4ckebrons Sawmill AB and Balungstrands Sawmill AB, in an interview with Swedish media.<\/p>\n

During the years under German ownership, the sawmills have operated independently.<\/p>\n

\"We have run our own operations, handled purchases, sales, and finances entirely on our own. We had a couple of review meetings per year with the owners, and that was it,\" Gillberg said.<\/p>\n

The insolvency of Ziegler Group has had little direct impact on daily operations at B\u00e4ckebrons Sawmill.<\/p>\n

\"We continue as before. We no longer report to anyone, but we also don\u2019t have anyone to rely on if challenges arise. However, we have ensured a reasonably strong cash position and have prepared for a transition period. Our balance sheet is solid, and we have no loans, so we can sustain ourselves for several months.\"<\/p>\n

The sawmill industry is under severe pressure, with high raw material costs and weak demand affecting profitability. According to Gillberg, most sawmills will struggle to remain profitable in early 2025.<\/p>\n

\"Timber costs are high, production costs have risen, and both chip and sawdust prices are slightly lower. Most companies will report losses in the first quarter. We hope to break even, but it will be tough,\" he noted.<\/p>\n

As part of a broader industry consolidation, many sawmills are being shut down or acquired. In this context, a new owner has now been secured for B\u00e4ckebrons Sawmill. The German wood industry company Rettenmeier has taken over the business, marking a new chapter for the sawmill. The acquisition is expected to bring a more active ownership structure, which the management sees as an opportunity for further development.<\/p>\n

Despite the challenging market conditions, sales have remained stable, with over half of the production sold within Sweden and the remainder exported to Norway, Germany, Austria, the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, the Baltics, and parts of Asia.
