U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on goods imported from the European Union, claiming that the bloc was created to \u201cscrew\u201d the United States. Speaking during a cabinet meeting on February 26, 2025, Trump revealed that a decision on tariffs had already been made and would be formally announced \u201cvery soon.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019ll be 25 percent, generally speaking,\u201d Trump told reporters. \u201cAnd that\u2019ll be on cars and all other things.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s remarks are a continuation of his longstanding criticism of trade imbalances, particularly with the European Union. He claimed that the EU has unfairly restricted U.S. exports, including vehicles and farm products, while the U.S. imports everything from the EU. Trump also pointed out that the EU imposes a 10% tariff on U.S. car imports, which is four times higher than the U.S. tariff on European passenger cars. Additionally, the U.S. charges a 25% tariff on imported pick-up trucks.<\/p>\n

The President\u2019s comments were met with swift condemnation from the European Commission, which asserted that the EU has been beneficial for U.S. businesses. A spokesperson for the Commission stated, \u201cThe EU has been a boon for the United States.\u201d They also vowed to react \"firmly and immediately\" against what they termed \"unjustified barriers to free and fair trade,\" including tariffs targeting legal and non-discriminatory policies.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s remarks, which framed the EU as an institution designed to disadvantage the U.S., sparked a sharp response from European officials. The European Commission emphasized that the EU had created a regional market that facilitated business for American firms, making it easier for U.S. products to enter European markets.<\/p>\n

Trump reiterated his view that the EU was formed with the intent to harm the United States\u2019 interests. \u201cLook, let\u2019s be honest, the European Union was formed in order to screw the United States,\u201d Trump stated. \u201cThat\u2019s the purpose of it, and they\u2019ve done a good job of it. But now I\u2019m president.\u201d<\/p>\n
