Depending on this, as well as on the quantity of wood offered, demand ranges from normal to brisk. As a result, prices have stabilized and, in some regions, have seen slight increases. Weather conditions are causing delays in log skidding in some areas. Provided that road conditions allow, prepared assortments are usually transported quickly. Short-term delays may also occur due to quota-based deliveries in the damaged areas of Eastern Styria. Demand for larch remains consistently high. Pine is being marketed at stable prices.

Hardwood sawlogs

Oak and ash continue to be in high demand in the hardwood sawlog market. The trend towards oak has also been evident in high-value timber auctions—both due to the volume delivered and the attractive prices. The most expensive log was an oak, fetching around €10,000. However, the highest price per cubic meter was achieved by a walnut log at €2,850.

Industrial wood

The paper, pulp, and panel industries remain receptive to softwood industrial roundwood. Supply and demand are balanced. Available volumes are generally transported and accepted quickly. In the damaged areas of eastern Austria, initial efforts have focused on transporting sawlogs, but the resulting forest storage sites are expected to clear soon. Prices remain stable. Demand and pricing for beech fiberwood are also steady, and ash fiberwood sales are possible.

Energy wood

The energy wood market remains subdued, with no signs of recovery despite cooler temperatures. Marketing energy wood, especially lower-quality material, remains challenging outside of long-term contracts.

This winter has seen a precipitation deficit of around 50%, making it all the more important to focus on forest hygiene and remove potential bark beetle breeding material from the forest now. In general, all logging activities should be coordinated with customers in advance to ensure better planning.

Net prices in February 2025 (EUR/m³)

Region

Spruce/Fir, A, B, C, 1b

Spruce/Fir, A, B, C, 2b

Spruce/Fir, A, B, C, Media 3a

Burgenland

75-87

95-110

-

Carinthia

80-85

100-107

-

Lower Austria

85-90

110-115

110-115

Upper Austria

80-90

106-115

106-115

Salzburg

85-95

106-115

106-115

Styria

82-91

104-112

-

Tyrol

78-85

106-112

-

Vorarlberg

85-90

108-114

108-114

The Austrian sawmill industry’s stock levels of spruce sawlogs vary by location.
