The logs have stopped flowing from Russia\u2019s St. Petersburg ports into European markets, as sanctions imposed due to the Ukraine war take a heavy toll on the Segezha Group\u2019s global export operations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Exports of Russian biofuels have collapsed, with Segezha Group\u2014the country\u2019s largest forestry company\u2014reporting a sharp decline in wood pellet sales. Shipments have fallen by more than 87% since the conflict began, reflecting the company\u2019s growing reliance on the domestic market. While Russia now accounts for half of Segezha\u2019s biofuel sales, the drop in exports has led to a significant contraction in production.<\/p>\n

Once the world\u2019s second-largest pulp and paper producer, Segezha has seen its wood pellet exports decline from 259,000 tons in 2022 to 151,000 tons in 2023, before plummeting to just 34,000 tons last year. The situation worsened in late 2024, when the company raised funds on the Moscow Stock Exchange, triggering a 20% drop in its share price in a single day. According to Russian media, \u201cSegezha\u2019s financial difficulties are largely driven by ongoing sanctions. The company has struggled since losing access to its European market due to the embargo on Russian forest products, including plywood, lumber, and pellets.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Russian timber sector has suffered heavy losses across the board, with exports down by more than one-third. Recent data shows that the country exported 930,000 tons of wooden pellets in 2023\u2014a 46% decline from 2022 and 60% lower than pre-sanctions levels in 2021, when shipments peaked at 2.44 million tons.<\/p>\n

Further compounding the crisis, Russia\u2019s Federal Tax Service recently froze the bank accounts of ULK Group, one of the country\u2019s largest sawmilling companies, over unpaid taxes. Industry analysts believe that even if ULK manages to settle its tax debt of 416 million rubles ($4.7 million), the company is unlikely to regain its former export market position. In January, ULK put two of its logging operations up for sale as financial losses mounted.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, economic pressures continue to mount across Russia\u2019s lumber industry. Sanctions and record-high interest rates have severely impacted forestry companies, many of which now face insolvency. Analysts estimate that the sector has lost nearly EUR 6 billion in export revenues, as companies struggle to find alternative markets for their products.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
