The estimate includes an anticipated rise in existing duties, coupled with a proposed 25% tariff on Canadian goods.<\/p>\n<p>\"The cost of rebuilding homes, especially after devastating wildfires, could rise 20% to 40% due to these tariffs,\" Parmar told reporters in Sacramento.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. President Donald Trump delayed announcing his plans for the new tariff until March 4. He has previously said that the United States does not need Canadian lumber, a claim Parmar disputed.<\/p>\n<p>\"The U.S. relies on Canadian softwood lumber to meet homebuilding demand, as domestic production covers only about 70% of the market,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>The California Building Industry Association has voiced concerns over the potential tariff hike, with CEO Dan Dunmoyer warning that the state lacks local supply and infrastructure to offset Canadian imports.<\/p>\n<p>\"California depends on Canadian lumber.
