<\/span>Finnish wood processing company Koskisen\u00a0 reported on Monday a rise in revenue for 2024, driven by higher sawmill delivery volumes and strengthened price levels compared to the previous year. However, profitability declined due to high raw material costs and weaker demand in panel products.<\/p>\n

Q4 and Full-Year Performance<\/strong><\/p>\n

Koskisen's revenue for the fourth quarter increased to 73.0 million euros ($78.2 million) from 68.7 million euros a year earlier. Adjusted EBITDA rose slightly to 5.7 million euros from 5.5 million euros, while the adjusted EBITDA margin stood at 7.8% compared to 8.0% in the prior-year period.<\/p>\n

For the full year, revenue grew 4.1% to 282.3 million euros. However, adjusted EBITDA dropped to 24.3 million euros from 33.1 million euros, and the adjusted EBITDA margin fell to 8.6% from 12.2% a year earlier. Net profit for 2024 declined to 8.3 million euros from 20.2 million euros in 2023, with diluted earnings per share at 0.36 euros, down from 0.87 euros.<\/p>\n

Sawmill Business Boosts Results<\/strong><\/p>\n

CEO Jukka Pahta noted that despite a challenging market environment, sawmill profitability improved in the final quarter, with EBITDA rising to 3.3 million euros from 1.0 million euros a year earlier. Production volumes increased from the previous quarter, maintaining the targeted 400,000 cubic meters annual output for its new investment. However, persistently high raw material costs continued to weigh on margins.<\/p>\n

In January, Koskisen completed capacity and test runs for its new log yard, with full transition expected by the end of February. The consolidation of sawmill operations is expected to improve productivity and significantly reduce logistics costs and CO2 emissions.<\/p>\n

Weak Panel Demand and Cost Pressures<\/strong><\/p>\n

Koskisen\u2019s panel business struggled, with EBITDA falling to 2.5 million euros from 4.7 million euros. Weak demand in the construction sector led to lower chipboard sales and production curtailments, including temporary layoffs. Veneer orders remained stable but below first-half levels. High raw material costs, write-downs on receivables, and inventory adjustments also pressured earnings.<\/p>\n

Despite these challenges, Koskisen is advancing its investment plans in panel production. A multi-year modernization program at its J\u00e4rvel\u00e4 plywood plant will begin in 2025, with a first-phase investment of approximately 12 million euros aimed at improving efficiency and quality through automation.<\/p>\n
