<\/span>Swedish sawmill groups Vida (owned by the Canadian timber giant Canfor) and S\u00f6dra have announced temporary production stoppages at all their sawmills due to record-high timber prices and raw material shortages. The shutdowns highlight ongoing pressures in the Swedish roundwood market, which has seen significant price increases in recent months.<\/p>\n

Vida halts production for a week<\/strong><\/p>\n

Vida, headquartered in Alvesta, will halt production across all twelve of its sawmills for at least a week, starting in mid-March. The stoppage, which includes facilities in Vimmerby and M\u00f6rlunda, comes as timber prices reach unprecedented levels.<\/p>\n

Despite the halt in sawing, employees will remain engaged in other tasks such as planing, drying, and maintenance. \"We will not be sawing during week eleven, but further processing will continue. This will not impact personnel as they will be assigned other duties, such as training and maintenance,\" said Jan Liljegren, CEO of Vida VMO.<\/p>\n

Liljegren emphasized that the decision was intended as a signal to the market. \"We have timber available, but the board decided to limit production for a week. This move highlights current market conditions,\" he explained. Further stoppages could be considered if market imbalances persist.<\/p>\n

S\u00f6dra joins in production cuts<\/strong><\/p>\n

Similarly, S\u00f6dra, the forestry cooperative representing southern Sweden\u2019s forest owners, has announced temporary shutdowns at all its sawmills during February due to raw material shortages and unfavorable weather conditions.<\/p>\n

Recent log price hikes have further complicated the situation. S\u00f6dra raised the price of softwood logs by up to \u20ac20 per cubic meter, marking the first increase of 2025 after five price hikes last year. The base price for high-quality spruce logs will now reach approximately \u20ac133 per cubic meter, while pine logs will exceed \u20ac140 per cubic meter.<\/p>\n

Market implications<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Swedish timber industry is facing a period of uncertainty, with rising log costs squeezing margins while sawn timber prices remain under pressure. The latest production stoppages indicate growing concerns about raw material availability and profitability within the sector.<\/p>\n
