The Russian lumber industry is reportedly unravelling under the impact of sanctions as companies struggle to find new markets for their product. Russian lumber companies have lost a third of their export markets as a result of sanctions, new data shows.<\/span><\/p>\n

Putin is facing a growing economic crisis as the country struggles to deal with the double whammy of biting sanctions and record-high interest rates. With inflation spiralling out of control, Russia's Central Bank was forced to hike interest rates to 21% late last year. Bank officials have not ruled out further hikes to stem the inflationary surge. Higher interest rates are making it increasingly difficult for companies to pay off bank loans, pushing many to the brink of insolvency. Compounding the serious difficulties are Western sanctions, which have closed off important export markets for Russian companies.<\/p>\n

The latest sector to feel the economic pain is Russia's lumber industry. The sector is reportedly unravelling under sanctions as companies struggle to find new markets for their product. New figures show the industry has lost almost EUR 6 billion in export revenues after losing a third of its markets, according to an insider.<\/p>\n

Kyrylo Shevchenko, the former head of Ukraine's National Bank, noted: \"The Kremlin scrambles\u2014tax cuts, state purchases, anything to keep it breathing. Profitability hovers near zero, interest rates climb, and shutdowns loom, threatening even stable sectors. Meanwhile, steel and coal spiral. The cost of Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine stretches far beyond the battlefield.\"<\/p>\n

Russia ranks second in the world with 82 billion cubic meters of forest resources. The annual value of Russia's timber industry exceeds EUR 30 billion, contributing about 1% to GDP, according to tendata.com.<\/p>\n

Russian timber has lost more than one-third of its export markets, with war sanctions and interest rates crippling one of Vladimir Putin\u2019s most important sources of funding. That is according to Kyrylo Shevchenko, former head of Ukraine\u2019s Central Bank, who said the decline in lumber (which makes up 1% of Russia\u2019s GDP) was having a major impact on Russia\u2019s economy: \u201cThe Kremlin scrambles tax cuts, state purchases, anything to keep it breathing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe cost of Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine stretches far beyond the battlefield. Profitability hovers near zero, interest rates climb, and shutdowns loom, threatening even stable sectors (like forestry).\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Shevchenko\u2019s comments come after Russia\u2019s Central Bank was forced to hike interest rates to 21% last year \u2013 pushing some of the world\u2019s largest pulp, paper and lumber producers to the brink of insolvency.<\/p>\n

Before the war, Russia ranked second in the world for lumber, with 82 billion cubic meters of available forest resources; however, thanks to sanctions, Russia increasingly relies on China, India, Japan, and even South Korea to make up the EUR 6 billion shortfall in export revenues.<\/p>\n

Russia is investing heavily in developing the Far East to supply Eurasian and Southern Asian economies with supplies of gas, minerals, and timber. Analysts suggest that reducing tariffs and logistical costs could open up significant markets for Russia, potentially exporting up to 50 million cubic metres of timber annually to India alone.<\/p>\n
