<\/span>Sawn timber production in Finland reached 10.9 million cubic meters in 2024, reflecting a 5% increase compared to the previous year, according to the Finnish Sawmill Industry Association (Sahateollisuus ry). The growth was particularly notable in the fourth quarter, driven by improved operating rates following the completion of several investments.<\/p>\n

Export volumes for January\u2013November 2024 amounted to 6.8 million cubic meters, marking a 3% decline from the corresponding period in 2023. However, the export value during the same period increased by 5%. Final figures for December are not yet available.<\/p>\n

\"The single most important factor in the operating environment is ensuring the availability of wood, and this should be considered in all decision-making,\" said Finnish Sawmill Industry Association CEO Tino Aalto in a statement.<\/p>\n

Timber construction in focus ahead of municipal elections<\/h3>\n

The Finnish Sawmill Industry Association also highlighted concerns over the decline in wood use in construction, attributing it to a slowdown in detached housing construction, limited development of wooden apartment buildings, and a lack of strong political support for timber construction.<\/p>\n

With municipal elections approaching, the association emphasized the opportunity to reverse this trend. It urged municipalities to integrate timber construction targets into their local and urban development strategies.<\/p>\n
