The Russian timber processing sector is facing difficulties in selling products on foreign markets, prompting the need for stronger domestic support. The issues experienced by processors have raised concerns regarding the stability of the industry, which has led to various government initiatives aimed at strengthening local operations.<\/span><\/p>\n

To address these concerns, the government is focusing on increasing domestic processing capacity, which aligns with broader strategic goals of economic stability. The push for domestic processing also aims to reduce dependency on global markets and support local industries.<\/p>\n

A key focus has been improving support mechanisms for the forestry sector. In late January, a meeting convened by Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak discussed various aspects of the forestry industry's performance, including financial figures, profitability, and potential risks posed by high interest rates. The discussions also highlighted the significant debt burden on some enterprises, making it more difficult for them to remain competitive amidst global market volatility.<\/p>\n

The government has put forward measures to stimulate demand for timber products within the domestic market. These include improving export logistics and increasing the efficiency of supply chains. Specifically, the government has tasked various ministries with exploring ways to boost transportation, such as increasing the number of direct container trains. At the subcommittee meeting, industry representatives made several requests, including a three-year moratorium on changes to forest plot rental charges, the removal of export duties on timber with moisture content exceeding 22%, and adjustments to regulations regarding timber transport vehicles. Specifically, they asked for exemptions from equipping foreign-registered vehicles with Russia\u2019s GLONASS tracking system, a regulation set to take effect in 2025. These requests reflect the sector's need for more favorable regulatory conditions as it faces mounting pressures at home and abroad.<\/p>\n
