In mid-summer, there was a slight decline in sawlog prices, but they have since recovered, continuing on a positive trend. While the economies of Latvia’s key export markets are still struggling, optimistic business forecasts for the upcoming year and low warehouse stocks are gradually driving up demand.

This overview provides a general assessment of December 2024 price changes and trends in Vidzeme, Kurzeme, and Latgale based on data from our depots and the price review conducted by the Forest and Wood Products Research and Development Institute.

Softwood sawlogs

Softwood sawlog prices remain relatively stable across all regions. In Vidzeme and Kurzeme, prices range from €85 to €90/m³, with high-quality stands reaching up to €100/m³. In Latgale, the situation is similar, with prices between €88 and €90/m³. While a slight price decline was observed in mid-summer, autumn and winter months have shown a positive trend.

Birch veneer logs

Birch veneer logs continue to be sold to AS Latvijas Finieris under a strategic partnership, ensuring significantly higher prices compared to other buyers in Latvia and neighboring countries. The average price per cubic meter is €105 in Vidzeme and Kurzeme, and €100 in Latgale. Notably, this price applies at roadside, not at the mill. Factoring in transport compensation, the price reaches approximately €110–115 in Vidzeme and Kurzeme and €105–110 in Latgale.

It is important to highlight that the advertised prices of up to €180/m³ or more from various resellers do not reflect the actual price a seller receives per cubic meter of cargo. In many cases, there may be only one, or even no logs, qualifying for this highest price category.

Aspen sawlogs

The aspen sawlog market currently exhibits regional differences in both prices and demand. Prices in Vidzeme are the highest, ranging from €110 to €130/m³, with actual invoice prices between €110 and €118/m³, reflecting strong demand. In Kurzeme, prices are lower, around €90/m³, while in Latgale, they reach €84/m³. Given the historically high prices in Vidzeme, forest owners in the region are advised to capitalize on the market conditions and sell aspen sawlogs to maximize their profits.

Pulpwood

Birch pulpwood prices are similar in Vidzeme and Kurzeme, ranging from €54 to €56/m³. In Latgale, prices are slightly lower, between €42 and €43/m³, depending on local demand, particularly in the Sēlija region, where prices can reach €53/m³. While a moderate price increase was observed in summer, prices have now stabilized.

Softwood pulpwood prices vary widely by region. In Vidzeme, they range from €60 to €64/m³, in Kurzeme around €63/m³, and in Latgale from €42 to €48/m³. Despite a slight price increase in recent months, regional differences in demand continue to influence sales strategies.

Aspen pulpwood prices have remained stable but show significant regional differences. In Kurzeme, prices are approximately €44/m³, while in Latgale, they range from €35 to €40/m³. Demand for aspen pulpwood is low, and price increases in this segment have not been observed.

Firewood

Firewood prices are fairly uniform across regions, ranging from €40 to €44/m³. Although winter demand might lead to a slight price increase, no such trend is currently evident.

Packaging wood

Hardwood packaging wood prices largely depend on the forest’s location and demand from nearby sawmills. In Vidzeme, prices range from €55 to €58/m³. In Kurzeme, thin packaging wood is priced at €57/m³, while thicker packaging wood is slightly lower at €55/m³—an uncommon price inversion likely influenced by AS LVM’s procurement specifications. In Latgale, prices are lower, around €53/m³.

Softwood packaging wood also shows significant regional price variations. In Vidzeme, prices range from €60 to €62/m³, sometimes higher. In Kurzeme, prices reach €73/m³, indicating higher value in the region. Latgale’s prices are around €65/m³, reflecting moderate regional demand.

As with hardwood packaging wood, softwood packaging wood prices depend heavily on forest location and transport distances to sawmills.

Oak sawlogs

Oak sawlogs are currently in high demand in Kurzeme, attracting supply from other Latvian regions to meet market needs. Prices range from €250 to €400/m³, depending on log quality.

Alder sawlogs

Alder sawlog demand and prices vary by region. In Vidzeme, both supply and demand are low, resulting in minimal market activity. In Kurzeme, prices range from €75 to €80/m³, but if supply increases, prices could reach up to €105/m³. In Latgale, prices remain stable at approximately €84/m³.

Wood chips

Wood chip prices have remained stable over the past year: €9–12/m³ in Vidzeme, €11–12/m³ in Kurzeme, and €9/m³ in Latgale. Although winter traditionally drives price increases, this has not been observed this year. Wood chip prices are influenced not only by seasonal factors but also by global energy markets, including fluctuations in gas and oil prices.

Conclusions and recommendations

Comparing current roundwood prices to pre-COVID-19 levels, they remain significantly higher, offering favorable opportunities for sellers. However, expectations for pandemic-era price spikes, driven by supply chain disruptions and the war in Ukraine, are unlikely to materialize again.

A modest, gradual increase in roundwood prices is expected in 2025. Historically, current prices are already high but are sustained by reduced sawmill profit margins. As demand for sawlogs increases, sawmills will likely first restore their profit levels, which may limit further price growth for roundwood.

Now is an opportune time to prepare cutting areas for 2025, when better market conditions may arise. Additionally, winter is the safest period for harvesting stands affected by bark beetles, especially for areas under 0.8 hectares. Delaying their harvest could lead to further losses.

Forest owners should also consider thinning out unproductive stands. These include overstocked spruce stands and mixed stands with a high proportion of aspen, grey alder, and willows. Such areas can be regenerated with support from EU-funded projects, creating more valuable and sustainable forests while enhancing long-term profitability.

Over the past six months, Latvia’s wood market has remained relatively stable in terms of pricing, although regional and seasonal price fluctuations continue to be observed.
