For the Swedish forest industry, however, the US market accounts for only about 5-10% of exports, depending on the segment, so the direct impact of these tariff changes is expected to be limited.

Christian Nielsen, market analyst for timber at the Swedish Forest Industries Federation (Skogsindustrierna), commented on the situation: "Contrary to what some might say, it’s unrealistic to believe that the US can become self-sufficient in softwood lumber. Currently, their import needs for wood products from Canada represent about 25% of their total consumption. The cost of imports from Canadian production will likely continue to set the benchmark. As a result, American consumers will bear the brunt of higher tariffs. For European producers, increased tariffs on Canada may enhance our competitiveness, but the impact of future tariffs on the EU is less clear, if any at all."

However, the situation is different in the paper and pulp markets, where the US has a greater potential to rely on its own production and reduce exports from other countries. Currently, 7% of Swedish pulp exports are directed to the US, while 5% of paper and cardboard exports go there as well.

For the Swedish forest industry, Nielsen points out that the US market remains a relatively small part of total exports: "The US market makes up about 5-10% of our export, depending on the segment, and the new tariffs are unlikely to have a significant impact on us."

Despite this, an escalating trade conflict does not benefit any party, particularly for an export-dependent country like Sweden. In fact, 92% of Sweden’s paper and cardboard production is exported. It’s clear that global flows of forest industry products may be redirected as a result of these developments. The export value of Sweden's forestry industry reached approximately 185 billion SEK in 2023, accounting for roughly 9% of Sweden’s total merchandise trade.

While the immediate effects of the US tariffs on Swedish exports are minimal, the potential for further disruptions in global trade flows poses risks to Sweden’s forestry sector, which relies heavily on international markets. The coming months will reveal how the situation evolves and whether new trade barriers could reshape the landscape for Swedish forest industry exports.

On February 11, 2025, the United States paused its plans to impose higher tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada for 30 days, while new tariffs on Chinese goods were enacted.
