<\/span>The wood industry in Austria\u2019s Waldviertel region is facing severe strain due to soaring roundwood prices. Industry representatives warn of an existential competitive disadvantage and urge immediate measures to support the region\u2019s sawmills.<\/p>\n

Rising costs threaten competitiveness<\/h4>\n

Roundwood prices in the Waldviertel are currently up to 15% higher than the Austrian average\u2014the highest in all of Europe. According to Franz Kirnbauer, head of the Lower Austrian wood industry group, the primary cause lies in past events: \"Climate change and bark beetles have forced forestry companies to harvest wood prematurely. Now, these stocks are depleted, leading to rising prices.\"<\/p>\n

For sawmills, this development is unsustainable. Procurement costs are increasing, while sawlog prices remain stagnant, eroding competitiveness in international markets. \"The discrepancy between roundwood costs and achievable sawlog prices is unsustainable,\" Kirnbauer emphasizes.<\/p>\n

Economic pressure mounts<\/h4>\n

The situation in Lower Austria\u2019s wood industry is growing increasingly critical. Beyond soaring roundwood prices, sawmills face additional burdens, including bureaucratic hurdles, declining construction activity, high energy costs, and wage increases. Small sawmills in the Waldviertel are particularly vulnerable, with some already operating at a loss.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf prices continue to rise, production will no longer be viable,\u201d warns a local entrepreneur.<\/p>\n

Calls for fair pricing<\/h4>\n

Industry representatives are calling for measures to balance roundwood prices. \"The price difference compared to the Austrian average is unjustifiable. Many businesses can no longer sustain operations in the Waldviertel under these conditions,\" Kirnbauer stresses.<\/p>\n

A further increase in costs could jeopardize not only the timber sector but also Lower Austria\u2019s broader economic stability.<\/p>\n

The timber sector plays a crucial role in Lower Austria\u2019s economy, with approximately 270 companies employing over 5,350 people, many of them in the Waldviertel.
