Spruce lumber prices have seen a slight increase this year, but the overall market tension remains unresolved.

Despite the price uptick, sawmills continue to face significant challenges in selling lumber, with slow sales progress keeping the domestic market under strain. Moreover, the sluggish outlook for Germany's construction sector and the broader economic weakness in 2025 make a strong rebound in demand for construction materials unlikely.

In contrast, the German log market is showing a different trend. Although log prices rose significantly between October and November 2024, spruce log prices in early 2025 have continued to increase slightly in some regions compared to the fourth quarter of 2024. The pine log market is also performing well, with demand for pine logs notably strengthening.

In the hardwood log market, oak and ash logs are seeing the highest demand. The industrial log market remains mostly balanced, with strong demand in regions home to the pulp, paper, and board industries. While prices are generally stable, forest owners report price pressures in certain areas.

Germany’s wood export market presents a contrasting picture. As one of China's top five wood suppliers for years, Germany experienced a sharp decline in its wood exports to China in 2024, dropping by nearly 60%. Customs data show that Germany’s wood exports to China fell by 56% to 1.94 million cubic meters in 2024, with export value down 50% year-on-year. However, the average import price per unit increased by 13% compared to the same period in 2023.

Meanwhile, German lumber exports to its key buyer, the US, are performing well. Exporters are securing very favorable prices in the US market. Additionally, the impending 25% tariff on Canadian softwood lumber in the US is creating new opportunities for German wood exports.

Given the short-term outlook for Germany's construction sector and the continued weakness in demand for construction materials, some industry players believe that wood prices are unlikely to see a significant rise. However, some industry associations argue that despite the weak economic outlook, strong demand for softwood sawlogs will persist through the first quarter of 2025, with prices even seeing slight increases in certain regions.

As 2025 unfolds, Germany’s wood market finds itself at a crossroads full of uncertainties.
