<\/span>Despite the recession and reduced construction in the domestic market, Swedish sawmills continued to deliver well in 2024, and the autumn in particular was unexpectedly strong compared to the previous year. The explanation is exports, where the internal market within the EU in particular plays a key role.<\/p>\n

Unexpected strong autumn for wood products<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the beginning of 2024, the production of wood products was lower than the previous year, but the second half of the year was surprisingly strong and it finally landed at about the same level as in 2023, 17.8 million m3 of sawn timber. It was mainly exports to Europe and countries such as Egypt that helped to maintain production, despite a relatively modest construction pace in Sweden. Sanctions against Russia, as a result of the country's invasion of Ukraine, have affected the supply of raw materials to Europe.<\/p>\n

''If the trend with lower interest rates continues next year, it should mean more construction starts and thus continued good volume from the Swedish sawmills,'' says Christian Nielsen, market analyst for wood products at the Swedish Forest Industries Federation (Skogsindustrierna).<\/p>\n

Increased production of paper pulp for packaging<\/strong><\/p>\n

On the pulp side, there is a recovery compared to 2023 of 2.4 percent, mainly driven by a continued increase in integrated pulp. This compensates for a decrease in market pulp exports. However, in the long term, growth in market pulp is expected to be more robust and exports, which have grown in importance over time, currently account for almost 60 percent of pulp production.<\/p>\n

Paper and board production increased by a full 7.7 percent in 2024, driven by strong growth for both packaging and graphic paper, which turned around after a weak 2023. The packaging segment continues to be the backbone of Swedish paper and board production over the long term, while long-term demand for graphic paper continues to decline.<\/p>\n

''The significantly strengthened production in 2024 was partly due to many companies in the value chain building up their inventories. This effect is not expected to last next year. Changes in consumer purchasing behavior may also have a lasting impact,'' says Charlotte Dickens, market analyst for paper and pulp at Skogsindustrierna.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
