Germany is facing severe difficulties due to a slowdown in construction, high log prices, and oversaturated inventories. Additionally, Europe’s log production appears to be declining, driving log prices higher and intensifying lumber price tensions. These trends are expected to persist in 2025.

Russia: sustained pressure on exports

In 2024, Russia exported 13.67 million cubic meters of lumber to China, accounting for 21.75% of China’s total timber imports. With the EU ban on Russian wood products still in effect and ongoing geopolitical tensions, Russia’s timber market will likely continue to face shrinking market share and rising transportation costs in 2025.

Africa: growing supply with structural changes

African timber exports to China increased by 11% in 2024 to 2.86 million cubic meters. Gabon, the leading African supplier to China, saw its exports rise by 43%. However, unresolved power shortages in Gabon are expected to impact processing efficiency and production in early 2025.

Other African countries, including Ghana, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and the Central African Republic, also expanded timber exports to China. However, Cameroon is set to broaden its log export ban in 2025, and African nations are increasingly shifting towards downstream processing. As a result, Africa’s log exports to China may decline.

Oceania: stable but limited growth

Since China resumed Australian log imports over a year ago, trade volumes have remained steady, with Australia exporting 600,000 cubic meters of logs to China in 2024. However, as New Zealand had already filled Australia’s market gap, Australian exports are unlikely to see rapid growth in 2025.

New Zealand’s log exports to China experienced price increases for six consecutive months in the latter half of 2024. However, seasonal factors typically drive down prices from December to January due to an influx of low-cost, blue-stain logs. A price adjustment is expected in Q1 2025.

North America: tariffs shaping trade flows

In 2024, U.S. lumber exports to China grew by 5% to 3.43 million cubic meters. The impact of U.S.-China trade tariffs remains uncertain under the new U.S. administration. If high tariffs persist, lumber trade between the two countries could be affected.

Canada exported 2.48 million cubic meters of lumber to China in 2024, an 8.3% increase. With the U.S. planning additional tariffs on Canadian softwood, Canada-China timber trade is expected to remain stable, with potential for slight growth.

South America: cautious optimism

Brazil’s lumber market faced declining demand and price fluctuations in late 2024, leading some suppliers to lower prices. Meanwhile, demand for large-diameter logs remained strong, especially in the construction sector, potentially reducing small-diameter log supply.

Looking ahead to 2025, Brazil expects improved sales, particularly as delayed construction projects resume in early 2025, driving up demand for lumber and logs.

Asia: recovery and opportunities

Severe flooding in Thailand disrupted raw material supply in late 2024, pushing up rubberwood prices. With Thailand’s rubber production peaking from November to January, a slight price increase is expected in Q1 2025.

Domestically, China’s timber market faced multiple issues in 2024 due to a weak real estate sector, seasonal demand fluctuations, and port inventory build-up. However, government policies aimed at economic recovery could boost domestic demand.

Additionally, February to April marks China’s post-holiday production ramp-up, with major construction projects resuming. This period is typically the peak season for building materials, and timber suppliers should closely monitor market trends after the holiday.

Europe: shifting dynamics in supply As of December 2024, Russia, Germany, and Belarus remained among China’s top ten softwood lumber suppliers.
