Softwood lumber prices in Estonia will not increase significantly in the first quarter but are likely to rise in the second quarter due to a shortage of raw materials.<\/span><\/p>\n

Toomas P\u00e4rtel, Chairman of the Board at Puumarket, explained that wood prices are set quarterly in advance, and no major price hikes are expected at the start of this year. Over the past year, wood prices have remained stable, fluctuating within a 10% range. \"Demand for softwood lumber remains quite high\u2014volumes purchased last year were 10% higher than the year before. Wood is a relatively affordable building material, and its increased use is also supported by green trends,\" P\u00e4rtel noted.<\/p>\n

\"The prices for the second quarter have not yet been determined, but they will be significantly influenced by RMK [State Forest Management Centre] and similar timber auctions in neighboring countries, with known reductions in available volumes. At the end of the year, RMK auctioned a limited amount of wood, leaving many buyers empty-handed. This shortage of raw materials will likely start to impact sawmills, pushing prices up,\" said P\u00e4rtel.<\/p>\n

\"There are no longer any log imports from Russia, and Finland is facing similar raw material shortages. Large sawmills there are already experiencing a deficit, particularly for spruce logs, leading to reductions in production volumes. Demand for pine is generally lower, and supply remains sufficient,\" P\u00e4rtel added.<\/p>\n

\"At the same time, the European economy and demand for materials are beginning to recover. The decline in Euribor supports construction and development activities, and together with ongoing inflation, a slight increase in wood prices can be expected from the second quarter onward,\" P\u00e4rtel concluded.<\/p>\n

According to P\u00e4rtel, current softwood lumber prices are about 50% lower than in 2022, and overall building material prices have remained stable over the past year. \"Competition among sellers has intensified, which benefits buyers. The labor market situation has also improved\u2014many builders have returned from Finland, making it significantly easier and cheaper to find skilled workers than in recent years,\" he said, describing the state of the construction market.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
