<\/span>China has responded to the latest round of US tariffs with countermeasures, imposing new duties on American imports and launching an antitrust investigation into Google. The newly announced tariffs, ranging from 10% to 15%, will apply to US liquefied natural gas, coal, crude oil, farm equipment, and certain car imports. Additionally, China has introduced export controls on rare metals, a move seen as a strategic counterbalance to US trade policies. The measures were announced following the implementation of a 10% US tariff on Chinese goods, which President Donald Trump described as an \"opening salvo.\"<\/p>\n

The new tariffs will take effect on February 10 and target approximately $14 billion worth of US goods, representing less than 10% of total US exports to China in 2023. Analysts view China's response as measured, aimed at maintaining space for negotiations rather than escalating tensions further. While financial markets initially reacted, the impact was moderate, with Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng index closing up 2.7%, the offshore renminbi strengthening slightly, and oil prices declining by around 1%.<\/p>\n

Beijing\u2019s commerce ministry also announced new export controls on tungsten and over two dozen other rare metal products, which took effect immediately. Meanwhile, the Chinese government placed US biotech company Illumina and PVH Group, the parent company of Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger, on its \"unreliable entity list,\" citing national security concerns. The move follows previous disputes over the use of cotton from Xinjiang, a region where China has faced accusations of human rights violations.<\/p>\n

In a parallel development, China's antitrust regulator has launched an investigation into Google for suspected violations of anti-monopoly laws. While Google\u2019s search engine and most of its services are blocked in China, the company generates significant revenue from Chinese businesses advertising abroad. Moreover, Chinese phone manufacturers rely heavily on Google\u2019s Android operating system, an issue that has long been a point of friction between Beijing and Washington. The investigation echoes earlier US restrictions on Huawei, which cut the Chinese tech giant off from Google\u2019s software ecosystem and impacted its smartphone sales outside China.<\/p>\n

Trade tensions between the U.S. and China have repeatedly influenced the wood sector. Under the first Trump administration, steep tariffs on Chinese imports were met with retaliatory measures, including duties on U.S. logs and lumber. This directly affected American exporters, as China has long been a key buyer of U.S. hardwoods, particularly red oak, walnut, and cherry. The escalation led to declining exports, supply chain disruptions, and shifts in global wood trade flows.<\/p>\n

In 2018, China imposed tariffs of up to 25% on U.S. hardwood, causing a significant drop in shipments. Although some of these duties were later reduced or suspended, the uncertainty surrounding trade relations has made long-term planning difficult for U.S. exporters.
